         <description><![CDATA[<div>We learned that US students score lower in measurement and geometry than any other topics. We also learned that we need stronger measurement instruction in the early years. Lastly, we learned that the concept of geometry and measurement is one of the biggest and most applicable subject in math that we use in our day to day lives.&nbsp;<br><br>We found it interesting how students can grasp other concepts in math fairly easily but geometry is the one where students tend to struggle the most. &nbsp;<br>We learned about the Knowledge of geometry and that it has important implications for other areas in the curriculum and we want to learn what those implications are.<br><br>A question we have is "Why do students struggle with relating what they learn in math class to their day to day lives?" (why is our measurement unit not preparing us with being able to measure in our everyday lives? Why are we not taught to visualize perspective?)&nbsp; &nbsp;</div>]]></description>

The 3 most important things we learned from the readings:&nbsp;<br>- Pentominoes is joining 5 squares as if it has been cut from a square grid.<br>- Measurement is one of the principal real-world applications for math.<br>- Rulers can be viewed as cultural instruments, they can be used meaningfully in combination with manipulative's too help grasp understandings of length measurement.<br>2. 2 things you have found interesting/would like to learn more about:<br>- We would like to learn more about the Van Hiele Levels of Geometric Thought and how the different levels can be applied in classroom learning.<br>- It is interesting to us to think about visualization mentally and transforming shapes in our mind.<br>3. 1 Question we have:<br>- What is turtle geometry and how can it be  applied in the classroom?</div>]]></description>

We learned the concepts of linear measurement.<br>3. We learned that if you give students the opportunity to learn by themselves - we can determine how much prior knowledge they have and can contribute in the lesson.<br><br>2 things we found interesting:<br>1. We found mystery definition approach interesting because you provide examples and non-examples allowing children to develop their own understandings by comparing and contrasting.<br>2. We found it interesting how educators used non conventional standards of measurement to emphasize the importance of mathematical tools in measuring.&nbsp;<br><br>1 question you have:<br>How will technology influence how children view standard vs nonstandard ways of measurement (use of apps that measure for you etc)?</div>]]></description>

Research on linear, area, angle and turn measurement indicates that<br>measuring in general is more complex than learning the skills or procedures<br>for determining a measure<br>3. Geometry is the most difficult concept to grasp in math for students<br><br>Interesting:<br>1. Van Hiele Level of Geometric Thinking is not based on age, based on their own experience and connection.&nbsp;<br>2. People with well-developed spacial sense can see geometry in art, nature, and everyday objects.<br><br>Question:<br>1. Reaching Van Hiele's level 2 at the end of grade 8 is critically important. What if the student is not at that level yet? What can they do to catch up in order to get to level 2?</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Learned:<br>- it is important to understand that one lesson will have multiple ways of teaching and multiple steps in teaching and it is important to see the significance of seeing how all these steps connect<br>- the intent of the teacher might not be what the Ss understand because there is more than one way of representing/perceiving something. Teachers need to scaffold off previous knowledge of the child to help form metacognition (child as self vs. children as a whole and Personal knowledge vs. public knowledge)<br>- It is important to have a curriculum - it does not define your teaching style or significance of education, but it can assist in building your understanding of the content, goals and teaching style.<br>Interesting:<br>- kids' intuition on how to understand mathematical concepts<br>- how culture influences mathematical concepts (metric system vs. imperial system or base 10 vs. base 12 system)<br>Question:<br>How do you start with nothing?
