In the science classroom, student talk can look like sharing/discussing predictions or lab results. It can look like group members reading and interpreting a lab procedure and then discussing that procedure as a group. Student talk can involve the students presenting projects and becoming "experts".

In my class, student talk involves students asking me question through our notes or during the time they have to work on their homework. Sometimes, student talk also occurs when one student is helping another with the topic during homework or notes. At the beginning of the year, I was working towards the students working in groups and having a lot more discussions but ran into problems with the students not talking about the prompt or not talking at all, just agreeing with the "smart" student. I became very worried that my students weren't learning the material with this method and therefore, gave up too quickly. I would like to try it again but am worried.
