Lesson for Day - A Sea of Garbage?

Language Arts Focus: Determine relationships: Problem/solution

1. A large amount of garbage, made up mostly of plastic debris, has been discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean.

2. Even though a lot of the tiny plastic pieces are nearly invisible, the debris is harmful for fish, sea mammals, and humans. It can entangle birds, and is eaten by fish, which in turn are eaten by humans. As many as 100,000 sea mammals could die from ocean trash this year.

3. Since there is no way to clean the oceans, it is important to keep plastic out. People can use less of it, but if they are going to use it, they should make sure they dispose of it in the right places so it doesn't end up in our oceans.
