In my review of the NASPA website, I found that vast discussion and advocacy was given to immigration and the DACA program. Currently a large population of students attending institutions of higher education participate in the DACA program and vastly impact these institutions.

I was interested in the section of this book related to student academic issues. Specifically, I read about how colleges and universities must provide appropriate academic accommodations for students who qualify with disabilities. Institutions do not have to change their curriculum to meet the needs of students with disabilities, but modify assignments and provide appropriate accommodations based on qualified students with disabilities needs.

Second, the request for programmatic or other accommodations. Students with disabilities who are enrolled in a domestic program, but fail to make the college or university aware of a disability and request for accommodations, can be terminated from the program if the student does not meet the requirements of the program.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted to ensure that students with disabilities received proper accommodations to assist in the academic success in an institution of higher education. Colleges and universities are responsible for providing appropriate accommodations based on the individual needs of students with disabilities.

ADA also states that if an institution does not have knowledge of a student's disability then the institution is not held liable for not providing accommodations.

In my future work as an Academic Advisor in student affairs, it is my responsibility to assure that the needs of my students with disabilities are met by providing them with the necessary accommodations to be successful in higher education. If I am not meeting the needs of my students, then through the Americans with Disabilities Act I can be held liable for not providing necessary assistance to my students. Also understanding that if a student with disabilities does not actively inform the office of student affairs of their disability, then the institution is not required to provide accommodations.
