In this section, we learned about different types of trauma. Specifically, I focused on secondary trauma, burnout, and organizational trauma.

I focused on these three as they seemed the most relatable as I had seen some firsthand. Additionally, I watched a documentary about the family members of those lost on flight 93. This video hit home for me as I could relate to them and understand what they had gone through. After this specific lesson, I spoke to my wife about her experiences as she had been in similar situations during my deployments and it generated quite a conversation.

Learning about PFA was probably one of the best parts of this course. Although it was a five hour course learning how to support someone after a response like that on the psychological side was awesome. As a firefighter I have had the opportunity to save homes, property, pets even people but knowing what to say in a terrible time such as after a disaster is where I really would like to expand my horizon. After I retire from the Military I have a lot of interest in getting into this type of work, specifically in the realm of suicide prevention. However, it is difficult to know what to say, or how to react. I am known at work for being very strict, many people actually find me unapproachable unfortunately. However, I do have a great connection with others and I have made connections with even those that find me brass. After taking this computer based training I had a young leader in my office and he was having a difficult time. He began to cry as he was telling me about concerns with his family back home and I believe this course helped me to understand to look at what the member really needed at the time. He needed support, regardless of how far behind he was on his requirements he did not need to be scolded. Instead I let him cry, speak his mind and we developed a plan to move forward.

During our group project I was assigned to a group with three amazing other students that were extremely helpful and willing to work with my specific communication needs as I am limited being stationed in Honduras.

We worked on a project to develop a response plan to Suicide and Non-Suicidal Self Injury. I found this topic specifically interesting especially to research non-suicidal self injury. Researching that people cause themselves pain and harm, as a way to punish themselves was interesting to me as it demonstrates that not all of these individuals want to die, or even want a way out. They simply feel as though they needed to suffer for their actions. I have done a lot of research on what brings people to that point of taking their own life and have done research on non suicidal self injury in the past but this project gave me an opportunity to dive further into that and identify signs of this behavior as well.

There are trained counselors on the line readily available to meet via voice call or text. This resource replaced the National Suicide Prevention Line and developed a way to ensure mental health concerns were recognized under the same context as a physical emergency.
