Engagement is sometimes defined as how involved a student is in a task. What do you think the relationship between motivation and engagement is?
Do you think Virtual Exchange could improve motivation and engagement?

Motivation is closely related to engagenment for the simple reason that if the pupil is motivated(that is, interested in the topic or curious about it), he or she will undoubtedly be more engaged in the learning. Virtual Exchange could have a big impact in the effectiveness of teaching and learning by incorporating culture naturally as well as facilitating authentic communication and thus increasing student motivation and engagement.

Motivation can be - in simplistic terms - either intrinsic (i.e. the fact that the student really wants to do well just for their own feeling of success) or extrinsic (i.e. when a student wants to do well because they know they will have some sort of recompense waiting for them in case they succeed in the subject). Students may look like they are motivated but that does not mean they will engage in an activity. The onus of making the students engage in the lesson lies with the educator. This said, the virtual exchange may be beneficial since the students are involved with other "real" students their age which may awaken a natural curiosity (and consequently engagement) about different cultures.

They are closely linked but not the same. Looking through a social constructivist lens, engagement with a task happens merely by doing it. However, motivation is distinct. It is more likely to be created, for example, where opportunity is given to a student to appropriate the task or make it their own in some way. VE could improve both of these by providing a more familiar/comfortable method (through mobile phones/computers)to communicate with someone else and also the novelty of this intercultural communication could add to motivation too.

In my opinion, these two concepts are tightly intertwined. On the one hand, the higher the motivation for learning (a practical need for travelling or work purposes, the love towards the language and interest towards its culture, or other reasons) the more the learner is engaged. And viceversa, the engagement created artificially by a teacher or environment (specially elaborated tasks) might generate motivation in the student and awaken their curiosity and willingness to learn.

Virtual exchange could definitely improve motivation and engagement towards the task and the content itself. First of all because there is a collaboration, it is no longer individual work, and the participants understand their counterparts depend on them. Besides, another culture naturally provokes genuine curiosity, so the engagement grows. Another point to mention is the accomplishment of a task done together. Students get motivated to carry out certain tasks and then share some results about what they have achieved, with their usual circle of classmates (performance review sessions after the exchange like presentations or portfolios). That final stage is rewarding, and it´s when the learners realize the importance of their work.

Katia Piera

Motivation and engagement are two ideas closely related and connected to each other. Motivation is what makes engagement work, it is the first step to become engaged in an activity. When students participate actively in a task and they get successful, their engagement starts to grow exponentially. This way, a positive environment is spread among the groups of pupils, which can lead to efficient results and optimistic attitudes towards classwork.

At the same time, I believe virtual exchanges can boost people's confidence, as it is a way to share your feelings, opinions and to learn from someone else. It is clear that many people get more engaged in a particular task if they do it with a partner, therefore, it could definitely improve motivation and students' predisposition to work.

Belén Martínez Ortiz

Even though motivation and engagement are closely related, there is a slight difference between both terms. On the one hand, motivation is the internal desire to accomplish or carry out an action in order to achieve certain goals. This desire may be driven by intrinsic or extrinsic motives. On the other hand, engagement is the internal feeling that makes the student emotionally attached to any activity. The student is committed to working and carrying out the activities since they are connected and willing to do so.

However, both of them are crucial for the personal growth and learning of the students because without them, it will be very difficult for the student to evolve in a certain discipline.
