A. ConceptDefinition: What is the death sentence and why is it so controversial?

The death sentence is defined as putting criminals to stay on death row, where they wait for their execution date which was sentenced by the judge. There are approximately 2,500 people on death row in the US and some even have mental disabilities . The actual execution is known to be using the Midazolam drug (lethal injection) , which is apparently painful. But, the death sentence is known to be very controversial. For instance, people can change for the better, and deserve to get a lighter sentence. For example, Brandon Bernard, a father of 2, was executed for a crime he committed in 1999. Although he went through rehab he still got executed. Trump has always been known to support the death penalty and around 50 executions during his time in office. These examples are the main reason why there are so many people against the death penalty.

B. Chronological/Sequential: The Injustice That Brandon Bernard Faced

I, Brandon Bernard have always been facing injustice during my life. I was involved in a murder of 2 in 1999 and got sentenced to the death penalty in 2000. I always tried to stay out of trouble during my time on Death Row, and I changed for the better. My story went unnoticed until I met with Kim Kardashian and she shared my story with the internet on November 29th 2020, I was hopeful to get my story heard and have my sentence get changed. Time passed by and I got no notice of my sentence being changed. The day before my scheduled execution I regain a little bit of my hope as Kim Kardashian tweets at Trump on December 9th 2020, and asks for my sentence to be changed to a Life Sentence. But all the little hope I had was shortly evaporated when Trump ignored the plea and he continued with the scheduled execution date, killing me, Brandon Bernard, the father of 2 on December 10th even after all the change I worked so hard to create.

C: Cause and Effect: How Trump and Racism are Involved in the Death Penalty

When Trump got elected as the POTUS in 2016, he decided to continue government executions as he supported the idea of the death penalty. Since July 2019, there have been 13 executions. Then, when BIden got elected to office and replaced Trump, this led to Biden putting the executions on hold as he does not support the death penalty. Racial bias has always been a big issue about the death penalty. Awareness of racism has changed for the better recently, still inmates faced injustice as some got sentenced more than 30 years ago when there was much more racism in the world. A study showed that there are still 55% of the inmates sentenced to death in 1976, and as a result of this, there are still wrongfully sentenced minorities who got unfairly targeted so therefore are still sentenced to death with no way to change their sentence. Finally there are many people who can’t afford good lawyers to speak up for them, and because of this most people on death row are very poor and grew up with a poor family. Although Trump is out of office, there is still inmates who received injustice and can't escape their execution date, all because of the color of their skin.

D: Problem and Solution: How These Groups Help Save Lives

Many religious groups are trying to rebel against the death penalty, but one sister was especially moving. Sister Helen noticed the problem of people on death row having nobody visit them so Sister Helen took it in her hands to help comfort them. Sister Helen proposed the idea of being a spiritual advisor to the people on death row. While that was only one person, there are many many groups that are against the death penalty. NCAPD is a group that puts out information about the death penalty in an attempt to put out the word. An example of what a member of the NCAPD would do is what Jerry Givens did, who would go on city tours and spread the word of how state sanctioned killing is wrong, and has caused many people to change their point of view on the issue. Anybody can help change the world, so why not try to help remove the death penalty.
