The sinking of the Titanic in 1912 was one of the most devastating events of the 20th centuries (bloody wars aside). This piece of the hull was retrieved from the wreckage. I think it has major social significance because of how it affected society at the time and how it became a symbol of loss and anxiety.

Based on these artifacts I conclude that it was crucial time for the Modernist Movement and the spread of ideas through mass consumption. Furthermore, this period represents one of great tension which builds up to the First World War. We can see through the Boxer Rebellion or the Women's Rights Movement how people started to fight for what they thought was right. Because of the consumption of material, ideas were able to spread rapidly.
