One of the best things I've done with my makerspace is to make it student-directed, not teacher directed. Students select their own station, set their own goals, and monitor their own process to reach those goals. The makerspace activities aren't directly aligned with any specific standard or curriculum - the time in the makerspace is time for students to pursue interests above and beyond the curriculum. The teacher facilitates the process but does not guide it.
