Our country has been developing geothermal power since the 1970s and has the third highest geothermal power generation capacity after the U.S. and Indonesia. This is significantly relevant, particularly here in Mindanao where multiple geothermal sites exist, one prominent example is the  Mount Apo Geothermal Power Plant, which has a power output of 106 MW, and currently supplies electricity to Kidapawan and Davao Region.

Nevertheless, the implementation and operation of geothermal power plants are heavily dependent on their support at the local community level where the facility is to be constructed. Most consider the case of Mt. Apo geothermal project to be one of the most divisive Philippine development projects. A permit for exploration of the area was obtained in 1987; the exploratory wells revealed exploitable geothermal resources. However, the lack of support and acceptance of geothermal energy led to the inconsistent production of renewable energy.
