It comes from heat steams generated during the original formation of the planet, and if funded and supported enough, it can be a good alternative for fossil fuel energy. The video discusses the potential of Geothermal energy production in our country. Our country has been developing geothermal power since the 1970s and has the third highest geothermal power generation capacity after the U.S. and Indonesia. This is significantly relevant, particularly here in Mindanao where multiple geothermal sites exist, one prominent example is the Mount Apo Geothermal Power Plant, which has a power output of 106 MW, and currently supplies electricity to Kidapawan and Davao Region.

If we do not do anything about this, we will see a lot more fossil fuel activity in the near future, which would lead to increased electricity rates in Mindanao. This video encourages the viewers to support renewable sources of energy by promoting hydro power plant systems and solar farms in order to protect the environment, as well as meet the needs of the people.

This is critically valuable throughout Mindanao, where coal-fired power plants account for 2,263 MW, or 51% of the capacity mix. However, in order to meet its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the government is considering the possibility of gradually retiring Mindanao's coal-fired power plants by promoting renewable energy. In this regard, the purpose of this webinar is to provide valuable insights into the capacity of renewable energy as a viable path to energy security and sustainability in the Philippines.

Nevertheless, the implementation and operation of geothermal power plants are heavily dependent on their support at the local community level where the facility is to be constructed. Most consider the case of Mt. Apo geothermal project to be one of the most divisive Philippine development projects. A permit for exploration of the area was obtained in 1987; the exploratory wells revealed exploitable geothermal resources. However, the lack of support and acceptance of geothermal energy led to the inconsistent production of renewable energy.

Aside from its many environmental benefits, solar or renewable power requires less maintenance than traditional generators and improves public health. With Mindanao’s current power consumption, fossil fuel will be the dominating power source in the island, therefore increasing the country's carbon footprint emission. Alongside BGC’s renewable energy projects, It's their means of assisting the Philippines in achieving that objective, which undoubtedly includes Mindanao.
