WHAT’S A HADITH JIBRIL?

Hadith Jibril, the second hadith in Imam Al-Nawawi’s Forty Hadith, is one of the most comprehensive and fundamental hadiths in Islam. This narration provides a detailed summary of the core aspects of the religion, covering the essentials of Islam (outward practices), Iman (faith), and Ihsan (spiritual excellence).

THE MORAL THAT WE CAN GAIN FROM THIS HADITH

1) Holistic View of Islam:

Hadith Jibril teaches that Islam is a holistic way of life, combining three dimensions:

	•	Islam (practices): The physical acts of worship like prayer, fasting, and charity.

	•	Iman (faith): The inner beliefs and doctrines such as belief in Allah, angels, and the hereafter.

	•	Ihsan (excellence): The spiritual state of worshipping Allah as if one sees Him, which emphasizes sincerity and moral consciousness in all actions.

2) Importance of Actions and Faith:

The hadith shows the balance between external actions (Islam) and internal faith (Iman). It is not enough to just believe without practicing or to practice without sincere faith. Both are intertwined in the life of a Muslim.

3) Spiritual Excellence (Ihsan):

The concept of Ihsan encourages Muslims to strive for excellence in everything they do by being conscious of Allah’s constant presence. It emphasizes sincerity and perfecting one’s actions, whether in acts of worship or daily life.

4) The Reality of the Unseen:

Belief in things unseen—like the Day of Judgment, angels, and destiny—reminds believers that life is not limited to the physical world. This encourages humility, patience, and responsibility in one’s actions.

5) Awareness of the End Times:

The hadith also includes a discussion about the signs of the Day of Judgment, reminding Muslims of the temporality of this world and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter through righteous actions.

[1]Belief in Rasul (Messengers) and Anbiyah (Prophets) is key in Islam:

1. Anbiyah: Prophets chosen by Allah to guide people, such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Many prophets were sent throughout history.

2. Rasul: Messengers who brought new laws and scriptures, like Moses with the Torah, Jesus with the Gospel, and Muhammad (PBUH) with the Quran. Every Rasul is a prophet, but not all prophets are messengers.

Muhammad (PBUH) is the final messenger. This belief highlights Allah's continuous guidance to humanity.

[2]Qada refers to Allah's overall plan and decree, encompassing everything that happens in creation.

Qadar refers to Allah’s precise measurement and implementation of that plan, meaning that everything happens according to His will and wisdom.

This belief teaches that while humans have free will to make choices, everything ultimately occurs within Allah’s divine plan. It encourages trust in Allah’s wisdom, especially during hardship or uncertainty.

[3]Belief in Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) is a fundamental part of Islamic faith. It refers to the belief that, at the end of time, all people will be resurrected and judged by Allah based on their deeds in this life.

On this day, everyone will be held accountable, and their actions will determine whether they enter Paradise (Jannah) or Hell (Jahannam). It is a day when justice will be served, and every soul will receive what they deserve. This belief encourages Muslims to live righteously and be mindful of their actions.
