Unconditional Love

"But despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like- what the world would be like- without him in it. As awful as he could be, I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had." This quote and picture relate to the theme because it displays the relationship between Jeannette and Rex. Rex always wanted Jeannette to learn things by herself and not depend on anyone. Jeannette didn't understand this in the beginning but she later realized that's how her father was and knew that without him in her life wouldn't be that interesting.

"For the first week, everything went according to plan. I bought food and made meals for Brian, Maureen, and me. It had been almost a year since the welfare man had scared us into cleaning the house, and it was once again an unholy mess." This quote and picture relate to the theme because Jeannette was the only one who was helping out the family while her mom left and her dad wasn't helping. She was the one who was saving money for groceries.

"She never said she was sorry for the bullying, or even mentioned it, but she thanked me for bringing her neighbor home at night, and I figured that her request for help was as close to an apology as I would get." I think the picture and quote relate to the theme because even though Dinitia never said sorry she showed her forgiveness through other actions. She knew that Jeannette was a good person and changed because of it.

Chaos and Order

"It didn't bother her that when Miss Beatty showed up to observe Mom's class, Mom started yelling at Lori to prove to Miss Beatty that she was capable of disciplining her students. One time Mom went so far as to order Lori up to the front of the class, where she gave her a whipping with a wooden paddle." This quote and picture relate to the theme because when Rose Mary was forced by her kids to get a job so that the family could eat, she didn't do a great job being a teacher. She never taught the students, never cleaned the class, didn't grade papers, and had no rules. Her own kids had to be the ones to do the work for her because if she didn't keep that job then the family would go back to being poor and starve for weeks. The kids were keeping things in order while Rose Mary was letting chaos happen around her.

"He explained that he was going to hire a truck to cart the garbage to the dump all at once. But he never got around to that, either, and as Brian and I watched, the hole for the Glass Castle's foundation slowly filled with garbage." The quote and picture relate to the theme because Jeannette and Brian had hope that Rex was going to build the Glass Castle he's promised. When they dig up the foundation for the house Rex says it wasn't needed and fills it up with trash. The kids realize that there's no Glass Castle that's going to be built.

"A year after Dad died, I left Eric. He was a good man, but not the right one for me. And Park Avenue was not where I belonged. I took a small apartment on the West Side." The quote and picture relate to the theme because to find her identity she had to get away from the way she was living with Eric. She realized that she didn't belong in the nicer part of New York. She moved to the West Side of New York. It was a less nice place but it was where she felt more comfortable as a person.
