Course Evaluation re: Sessional availability outside of class time

One of the questions on the student course evaluation form is: "I think the instructor made a genuine effort to be available outside of class (face to face, electronically)." Is this a realistic expectation for Sessional instructors? And what is considered a "genuine effort?" Sessionals are part-time; they are often working other jobs. As such, they are pulled in many different directions and don't have round the clock availability for students. Sessional pay reflects scheduled class times and the accompanying office hour(s). In comparison to a full-time instructor, a Sessional is certainly not going to be available outside of class as much as their tenured colleagues are. Students often don't understand the difference between Sessionals and full-time instructors and therefore can view their Sessional instructor as not having given a genuine effort to be available when, in fact, they may be going above and beyond the time for which they are compensated. This perceived lack of availability can result in a poor score in this area of Sessional course evaluations. In its current form, this is an unfair question to pose on evaluations and it should either be removed or reworded in order to better reflect the definition of "outside of class time."
