Flashcard Dodgeball

Objective:

Kids will play dodgeball, but instead of just avoiding balls, they will also need to correctly identify flashcards to earn points or stay in the game.

How to Play:

Setup:

Divide the kids into two teams.

Scatter flashcards (with words like "pencil," "crayon," "book," etc.) around the dodgeball play area. Each flashcard should be visible to everyone.

Keep soft dodgeballs ready for each team.

The Dodgeball Rules:

Play standard dodgeball rules: kids must throw balls to tag players on the opposing team. If tagged, players are out (or they can go to a “waiting area” and can be brought back in if a teammate completes a task, like identifying a flashcard).

Flashcard Challenges:

Every time a player gets tagged or caught by a dodgeball, they must race to the nearest flashcard (in the middle of the play area) and correctly identify it to re-enter the game.

For example:

If a player is hit by a dodgeball, they have to run to a flashcard, read it, and say something related to it (like “Pencil! It's used for writing!”).

If the player identifies the flashcard correctly, they can return to the game. If they can't identify it, they stay out for one more round.

Special Dodgeball Flashcard Rules (optional):

Power-Up Cards: Some flashcards could be "special power-up" cards. If a player reaches a flashcard with a star or special mark (e.g., "Super Eraser"), they can tag an opposing player back into the game immediately, or they get to throw two dodgeballs at once.

Flashcard Protection: If a player is holding a flashcard, they are “protected” from being tagged by dodgeballs for 5 seconds (giving them time to identify the card or move to safety).

Winning:

The game continues until one team completely eliminates the other team, or until all flashcards are collected. The team with the most correct flashcard identifications wins.

Active Twist:

To make things even more exciting, add physical challenges when reaching the flashcards. For example, players might need to:

Hop to the flashcard.

Spin in place before they pick up the flashcard.

Do a jumping jack or run around a cone before grabbing the card.

Lesson Breakdown:

1. Introduction (5 Minutes)

Greeting and Warm-Up:
Start by greeting the students and asking, “What does it mean to be a good friend?” Focus on the ideas of being helpful and respectful.

Overview of the Lesson:
“Today, we’re going to practice being helpful and respectful while giving directions. We will also learn some new words and use them to ask and give directions around the classroom and school.”

2. Key Concepts: Helpfulness and Respect (7 Minutes)

Helpful:
“Being helpful means offering to assist others when they need it, without expecting something in return. Helping others makes us good friends.”

Respectful:
“Being respectful means treating others kindly—using polite words, listening to others, and following directions.”

Introduce Flashcards:
Show the flashcards one by one, and have the class repeat the words after you. You can use flashcards like:

Activity Room

Classroom

Karaoke Room

Reading Room

Canteen

Corridor

Here

There

Help

Please

Thank you

Let’s go

Discussion:
Explain how each of these words will be used in today’s activity. For example:

“We will be asking Where is the Reading Room? and responding, It’s right there.”

“We will say Please and Thank you when asking for help.”

3. Classroom Activity: “Where is the _______?” (15 Minutes)
This interactive activity allows students to practice giving and receiving directions while using the flashcards and demonstrating helpfulness and respect.

Activity Setup:

Arrange the classroom or select different areas of the school (such as Activity Room, Classroom, Reading Room, Canteen, Corridor).

Display or hold up the flashcards with the names of different areas.

Instructions:

Demonstration:
Model the activity for the students. Ask, "Where is the Activity Room?" and point to a corner of the room or a designated space. Respond, "It’s right there. Let’s go to the Activity Room."
Demonstrate how to use the flashcards for direction-giving and respectful communication.

"Where is the Canteen?"

“It’s right there, let’s go to the Canteen together."
Use please and thank you in your responses:
"Can you show me where the Karaoke Room is, please?"

Partner Practice:
Divide students into pairs. Give each pair a set of flashcards. One student will ask, "Where is the Classroom?" while the other will use the flashcards to respond, "It’s right there, let’s go to the Classroom." Students should rotate roles after each turn.

Group Practice:
As a class, practice together asking and giving directions.

Ask a few students: "Where is the Reading Room?" and respond using the flashcards: "It’s right there."
Encourage students to use polite language and take turns asking and answering.

4. Group Reflection and Class Discussion (5 Minutes)
After the activity, gather the class for a brief discussion:

"How did it feel when your friend helped you by giving directions?"

"Why is it important to say please and thank you when asking for help?"

"What makes giving directions respectful?"

Encourage students to share their thoughts, emphasizing how being helpful and respectful makes communication easier and more enjoyable.

5. Closing Activity: "I Promise to Be Helpful and Respectful" (5 Minutes)

Instructions:
Give each student a sticky note or small piece of paper. Ask them to write or draw one way they will be helpful and respectful to a friend in the future.

Example 1: "I will help my friend find their seat."

Example 2: "I will use please and thank you when I ask for help."

Sharing:
If time allows, have a few students share their promises with the class. This will help reinforce their commitment to practicing helpfulness and respect.

6. Conclusion and Goodbye (3 Minutes)

Wrap-Up:
"Remember, being helpful and respectful makes us great friends and helps us work together better. When we give clear directions and say please and thank you, we make everyone feel good!"

Final Encouragement:
“Great job today, everyone! Keep practicing being helpful and respectful, and have fun using your new words to ask and give directions!”
