I am working on becoming a school counselor. I would ideally like to work with high school students or be a district counselor serving all grade levels. After graduating I would like to pursue the LPC bridge program and hopefully be able to do some independent work on the side.

Research in my future role is going to be vital to my counseling success. Knowing and understanding all the theories, studies, and ideas that stem from counseling will help shape my work and keep me up to date with all the new knowledge.

Types of Research in our Field

There are many different types of research that focus on counseling a few examples are descriptive research explaining the science or study of the mind and behavior, quantitative studies that show the effects of cognitive behavioral group counseling, or a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, utilizing a pretest-posttest study to show the effects of classical counseling guidance services on increasing self control of high school students.

Some big topics that are currently being studied in counseling are the effects of different counseling methods, cultural competence in counseling, different counseling theories, technology within counseling, the burnout effect of counselors, and so many more.
