Through the experience, I was able to see Christina’s role as a forensic nurse and sexual assault nurse examiner in full. During the time I worked with her I developed an understanding of her role by MFE (medical forensic examinations), grants, budgets, law enforcement, mandatory reporting, appropriate documentation, QA, and teamwork & collaboration.

 I was able to experience each type of MFE during my time with Christina. This included SA, strangulation, pediatric, and perpetrator examinations. I was also able to experience the documentation process as well as work with the equipment.

Before departure on my last practicum day, Christina and I reviewed any final objectives for my project and the needs of Turning Point. We identified the needs as bridging the gap between Turning Point and mental health services, the need for psychiatric medication education, and identifying the self-care deficit of IVP/DV/SA survivors.

I was able to meet this goal as I developed an understanding of how the grant process works and how the SANE program receives its funding to be able to pay for its testing kits, supplies, and staff as the patients are never charged for any services. Turning Point is also non-profit.
