The Truman Doctrine 1947

Something that I found interesting about this was It established the U.S. policy of containing communism, leading to long term commitments alliances and alliances. George Kennan sought to stop the spread of communism instead of confronting the Soviet union military. The U.S. provided $400 million to the military and economic aid to prevent them from falling under Soviet influence. The Truman Doctrine set the stage for the U.S. interventions just like the Marshall Plan the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

The Marshall Plan 1948

The Marshall Plan provided over 13 billion to help rebuild European economies after world war ll. The plan was named after U.S. secretary of state George C. Marshall. who introduced the plan in a speech at Harvard. The aid from the western Europeans helped rebuild the infrastructure rapidly,modernize industries,and strengthen trade.

The Korean War 1950

The Korean war was the first major conflict of the cold war. The Korean war was the first military confrontation between communist and capitalist forces. It started with a surprise invasion on June 25 1950 north Korean forces equipped with Soviet weapons and launched a surprise invasion.

The Berlin Airlift 1949

The Berlin Airlift was initiated by the western allies but primarily the U.S. and Britain. At its peak the planes were landing in Berlin almost every 30 seconds with supplies like food and fuel. Also there's a guy called Gail Halvorson that went famous for dropping candy with parachutes for the kids in Berlin.

McCarthyism and the Red Scare 1950's

McCarthy claimed in 1950 that he had a list of communist working in the U.S. government. McCarty emerged early in the cold war because he had fear that the communists had infiltrated the U.S. government. McCarthy also led to violations of freedom of speech and had many innocent people loose their jobs.

The Space Race & Moon Landing 1957

This space race was a competition and rivalry with the U.S. and the Soviet union during the cold war. The Soviet Union launched the first satellite into space called the sputnik 1. Then the first human on earth that went to space was Yuri Gagarin that was a major victory for the USSR in the space race.

The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)

When the Cuban missile happened it was the closest the world almost got into a nuclear war. The crisis began when an American U-2 spy photographed the Soviet missiles sited under construction in Cuba. Then the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles from Cuba but also wanted the U.S. to remove missiles that they had in Turkey.

The Vietnam War (1955-1975)

The Vietnam War was during the cold war. The U.S. aimed to prevent the spread of communists in South Asia. The war escalated after the Gulf Of Tonkin the U.S. ships were attacked by Vietnam North Vietnamese forces. Vietnam was unified under communist rule, and the war left over 3 million Vietnamese deaths.

The Rise of Suburbanization & Interstate Highways (1950s-1960s)

The Fall of the Soviet Union (1991)

In the 1980's The Soviet Union was struggling with High military spending and a failing centralized system. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced Perestroika and Glasnost in an attempt to modernize the USSR. On December 25 1991 Soviet republics declared independence, Gorbachev resigned. The USSR officially dissolved and Russia became an independent country under Yeltsin.
