This article displays the effects of cognitive behavior therapy and anti depressants. This study display quality information on the sections of the brain affected by depression and how treatment effects those parts of the brain. "At the end of the 16-week treatment phase of the study, there were no differences in outcome between ADM and CT, with 58% of patients in both treatment groups meeting the criteria for ‘response’. Curiously, there was no indication that the two treatments affected different symptom clusters of depression: patients treated with either ADM or CT showed comparable rates of change of both cognitive and vegetative symptoms of depression."

This excerpt demonstrates where talk therapy would be rendered less effective than medication due to chemical imbalances in the brain. “chemical imbalances in her brain that subtly changed the pattern of signals.”

Displays the connection between cognitive therapy and remapping the brain to create more healthy connections.
This source displays the ability for talk therapy to create more positive connections in the brain which can lead to a long term recovery from depression. For their new research, Mason and his colleagues followed 15 of the original study participants, tracking their health over the course of eight years using medical records. At the end of the eight years, the participants also answered questions about their overall recovery and well-being.

Displays personal examples of individuals dealing with depression and their overall take on talk therapy versus medicated treatments. This is important as the person them self has to deal with this disorder and what works for others may not work for them. However, it is inconclusive. “I had psychotherapy for five years and learned what probably caused my lifelong depression. I understood but felt no better. Only medication changed the way my life felt”

This source demonstrates the effectiveness of talk therapy. Patients that did not respond positively to medication were taken and given talk therapy or a mix of both and for the most part had positive results regarding talk therapy. This source however brings up the problem with therapy tending to be less accessible than anti depressants. “In the long run, talk therapy may well be worth it. “People who take antidepressants often end up taking them for life….With talk therapy, patients often go for a few months, or sometimes a few years, then stop when their symptoms have gone away”

Explained his experiences with both giving credit to each one in a different aspect of his recovery.
Gives an insight into a personal account of depression treatment. “Talk therapy for me has had its benefits by helping me recognize harmful behaviors as they appear. Medication has had its own benefits helping with the physiological aspect of depression and anxiety. It is hard for me to say which one has been more beneficial, because I believe they both have their place in treatment.”

Explains the connections between the brain and talk therapy/medication when related to various mental disorders. Explains the usefulness of talk therapy on the brain. Gives counter arguments for specific mental disorders. "In a study by Dr. Lewis Baxter at the U.C.L.A. School of Medicine, patients with the disorder who responded to either a reuptake inhibitor like Prozac or cognitive behavior therapy over 10 weeks showed virtually the same changes in their brains, decreases in the activities of the caudate nuclei and, thus, changes toward normal function."
