Because of the pandemic and students needing to self-quarantine at home for the rest of the school year, I found myself turning to lighter reading and skimming news articles whenever I see something interesting. Currently, I read mainly webcomics/WEBTOONs whenever I can but I also started reading a book series that I held off for over a year, Specials (from the Uglies series). In addition, I also try to read the newsletters or weekly emails the Chancellor sends out or other important emails regarding the school, our personal lives, or our community.

However, I do wish that I could continue reading some of the classics like Little Women and Pride and Prejudice because I want to expand my knowledge and improve my reading skills/comprehension. But what’s keeping me from continuing to read them or start in the first place is the length of the books, they’re time-consuming, and the language is hard to understand without teachers, which makes me procrastinate and avoid them.

Besides that, I usually use the internet or phone apps to access these books and reading materials, especially nowadays.

If I could choose, I prefer to mostly read hard copy books if they are available to me, but if not, I try to find them online either on my phone or computer/laptop. For the webcomics, I use an app called WEBTOON and WebComics on my phone to read whenever I have time. I also do this for the news too, or if I’m using the web, I would search the news articles on there.
All in all, I just read whenever I have time especially if it's easy or if it's accessible like through my phone for example, but I do hope to start moving on to something more challenging too.

At the moment, my relationship with reading is not that strong. Throughout high school I never really read "for fun”. The books that I did read were all for class assignments. Which meant that I only read the books because I needed to. One book that was assigned to my english class my sophomore year of high school, was “The Secret Life of Bees”. I remember reading that book and wanting to keep on reading. I told myself that I would try to find a book to read for fun. I would read the description paragraph located on the back cover of the book, but unfortunately I couldn't find any of the books interesting.

It's not that I hate reading. It's just that I haven't found a book that catches my attention and makes me want to sit down and read. When I was younger I remember that I used to read for fun. I used to read many book series. Titles such as “Goosebumps” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. Recently, I have been wanting to change that. I want to find a good book that makes me lose track of time.

I understand that the many benefits come from the power of reading. I want to change the fact that I only read when it's forced upon me. Given the certain circumstances we are in, I have found a lot of free time. I try to take advantage of that by reading articles and poems. I understand that reading is a very important skill as a college student, and I would like to strengthen my own reading and writing skills.

As of right now I am reading a book called Just Mercy. My relationship to reading has always been interesting. Sometimes all I want to do is stay in my room and read a hard copy book and other times I do not have the urge to read at all. Lately I have been pushing my book to the side and replacing it with watching tv, but I think it is because my family can be loud every now and then. As a reader I usually find myself reading a single paragraph over and over again because I spaced out, but I still enjoy the book.
My favorite books are mysteries because I like to guess the endings and see if I am right. I also like reading fictional books which help me to think of the world in a different perspective and I often like to think how I would play as a character in a book. Nonfictional books help me stay humble for the things I have in life, for example when I read about the difficulties people were challenged with during the wars or when being discriminated. I really enjoy reading a book and then watching the movie, if it has one, and comparing them. However, it seems that I usually get disappointed when some details are missing.
Most of the time, I am open to reading a book that is recommended to me by a friend or a teacher. For example, I never really read poetry books until my friend introduced me to her favorite book.
I would like to start listening to audiobooks so I could practice multitasking, like doing chores and listening to a book.

Right now I feel like my relationship to reading is disconnected. When I was younger I enjoyed reading a lot, mostly just for fun. Somewhere along the line my high school career made me hate reading. Nothing I read in school really sparked my interest, thus steering me away from reading completely.
I would like to return to the enjoyment of reading. I prefer reading non-fiction stories and on hard-copy books. As much as I enjoy my device, too much screen time hurts my eyes. Audio-books are tough for me because I enjoy following along the words, and a lot of the time I stop and write down questions when I read. Audio-books are hard to follow and pausing/playing becomes frustrating.
Non-fictions are my favorite because I like the idea of being able to say "This could (or did) actually happen".
I do enjoy music a lot, and spoken word pieces. Stories, especially personal ones, catch my attention a lot in the view of analyzing.
I do want to get back to reading, especially since I know I can benefit much more. The few times I have read at my own leisure it was to educate myself in certain topics and conversations. I wish high school hadn't ruined my relationship with reading, but at the same time I understand why the material was given.
I took a media literacy class during a summer program at UC Berkeley in which we analyzed and broke down songs, social media, and other sources. I enjoyed that class because it tied modern literacy and classic analyzing. Topics like those helped me enjoy reading and made it feel relevant.

I am not going to lie, I do not read as much compared to my siblings. My siblings have a passion for reading and I still have not developed it. When I do decide to read a book, my preference would be to read books about animals point of views. For instance, I would want the animal to narrate the book. I am hoping that in the future, I would get into a habit of naturally wanting to read a book. The books that I have read were mostly required for class. I try my best to stay interested since I lack motivation to read. At the moment, I do not have time to pick up a book and read. I rather choose a hard copy rather than any other forms of material.
The books that I have read which I found delightful are, How to Steal a Dog, Racing in the Rain, A dog's Life, and The Incredible Journey. These were some books that I have read in middle school. To this day, I still remember the images that I created while reading. Reading by far is my weakest subject, it is not because I do not want to. It is mainly because I get bored fast and I do not have peace and quiet to improve my skill. My environment while reading is complete quietness. I can not work, study, or read with a loud environment. I throw my focus off and I do not like loud noises.

As of right now, my relationship with reading isn't the greatest. I used to read books all the time when I was younger but as I got into high school I kind of stopped reading. The reason as to why my reading stopped was because I was always busy with sports, clubs, and AP courses. At the end of my senior year it was when I started reading again since I was enrolled in AP Literature and Composition. This class inspired me to read more because the books we were reading as a class really got my attention. One novel that I really enjoyed reading in there was "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin. This novel really made me dive deeper into the text and expand my view on the rights of women. Another book that we read in there was "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" and this one definitely made me read more because it made me analyze the work on a more complex level. So now when I read books I pay close attention to the names of characters, repeating symbols, time periods, or small details I would have never paid attention to. I enjoy reading hard copy books rather than something online. I find it hard to read textbooks or anything online a little difficult because my concentration just goes out the window. From now on, I plan to make reading more of a daily routine to my everyday life. I feel like reading allows your mind to explore and escape into a whole new world.

My current relationship to reading is not the best. As COVID-19 is keeping us in our homes all day, I thought that this would push me to want to read more. That was not what actually happened. As much as I would like to read different types of books and expand my knowledge. Picking up a book during my free time and reading without being told to has always been difficult for me. I just can't find the motivation right now to pick up a book and read it, and it is something I want to change in the future. I am currently working on trying to get back into reading books because I remembered loving the books I read for class in highschool.
My favorite books that I read during my senior year of highschool was "Brain on Fire" by Susannah Cahalan. The book was very interesting and was able to hold my full attention when I read it because it incorporated my love for the medical world in it. The second book was called "Deadman Walking" by Helen Prejean. This book was one of my favorites because I got to learn a lot about the U.S. Justice System that nver even crossed my mind before throught reading this amazing book. I believe that I loved these two books very much for the simple reason that not only were the books fun to read, but they were also educational. I got to take away good life lessons with me after finishing the two books.
I have always been interested in books in the horror genre. It was always something about books about scary stories that intrigued me. Recently, the types of books I want to read have changed. I am looking more towards books that are autobiographies because learning about people in history has always been a driving force for me to read more.
Overall, I know that I want to and should read more. So, this might be the perfect time to find a book I would enjoy and start reading.

My relationship to reading is a tricky thing. Normally our relationship is nonexistent. I am not the type of person who likes to sit down and read a book, so I read when I have to.
Reading has never been my thing I have always preferred to watch a movie over reading a book because I am a very visual person, I kinda have to see it to believe it. Being in the moment in a book is different then a movies because movies allow you to engage in the storyline in a different way. For me that level of engagement has only happened for me a few times. However during those rare occasions when I do read and become deeply engaged it's hard not to let my imagination run wild. To me only certain storylines should be left up to interpretation unless the storyline is clear enough
The only types of book I will read are those of the realistic fiction genre and the futuristic fiction. Books that I have read in the past and enjoyed include: The Divergent Series, The Hate You Give and Dumplin'.
Despite all of that I do like to analyze books. The only way for me to truly engage with a book and become invested in the storyline is if I analyze it. I don't know why, it seems a little backwards and I have no explanation for it.

My current relationship with reading is pretty good. I have been rereading my favorite series, The Series of Unfortunate Events. I have my mini book shelf with hard cover books that I have enjoyed reading throughout my life. Im planning to read even more books due to the time I am inside my house by ordering some online. I am pretty sure that I will be able to read more because of my fall quarter classes being in a remote setting. I am never really opposed to reading unless its a book that I have little to no interest in. My classes during the fall are classes that catch my eye and will have textbooks or online articles for me to read that will be related to the classes I will be taking.
Apart from books I have in my bookshelf that are traditional readings, I really enjoy reading online comics. I have an app where I am able to read webcomics and it updates depending on the author and artist. The app I use is called Webtoons and is a very clean and nice app where I get my webcomics.
Overall, My relationship with reading is very positive. I really don't mind what genre the book is as long as it is an interesting read, then I will for sure love to read the book.
Another thing I would like to add is that I like to listen to background music during my reading. It makes me more comfortable and makes me fell less alone in a sense.

I’ve have a rocky relationship with reading. In middle school I used to read almost everyday. I would read books with my friend and talk about them as if they were tv shows. As we grew older we thought reading books was weird and for nerds. Personally, I wish I hadn't stopped reading, because it improved my vocabulary. I was top 10 at my school for having a high reading level through out middle school. Now Imostly read articles on the google app. I'll skim through the articles it provides and choose one that catches my attention. I've read half of one hard copy book so far called, Calm the f*ck down. I started reading this book because I had two very rough weeks. The things I went through were out my control, so I decided to read this book to learn and cope with what I went through. I should probably finish the book soon. I listen to music a lot, so i'll read the lyrics, analyze it sometimes. I remember my APGOV teacher would make us analyze songs from the past that would talk about the government or wars. I always found it interesting how a three minute song could have so much meaning behind it.
Reading is cool because it improves my vocab.
I always encourage the younger students I know to read for the same reason I read. People will say it's boring because they only see one type of book, but don’t realize that there are plenty of different types of books. There will always be something for someone.

Currently I am “reading” a book that has been sitting on my desk for almost a month. I struggle with making time to read. I want to focus on reading, but I easily get distracted. When reading my time and attention has to be fully immersed into the written piece. I have to be in a silent environment, left only with my thoughts and the reading.

I prefer to have a book in my hand, it tends to help me concentrate. And whenever reading (a book, document, article, etc.), I take my time. I re-read the text several times, and usually it helps when I hear an audio, or read it to myself aloud (it makes me feel more engaged). I want to feel engaged when reading. Not feeling engaged when reading is my breaking point, the words easily skip my mind, I fumble through the words and forget to consume the information I’m reading.

In regards to my reading interests, I tend to gravitate towards books that are non-fiction, that help give me insights on topics of my interest. For example the book I have right now is a career guide that is supposed to help me explore my career possibilities. In addition I enjoy books that allow me to explore the diverse cultural perspectives of individuals, and see the beautiful stories intertwine and connect. Being able to connect through a written text, and vividly be immersed into a story, is rare for me, I have to push myself to reach that level of connection. And I do want to. Reading has always been depicted in the media, as a magical space to escape, and transform yourself from your daily endeavors. I want to get to that level of engagement, where reading brings me joy, not stress.

I used to love reading up until high school. Then reading felt like a homework assignment that I couldn’t wait to get rid of. I haven’t touched a physical novel in about 5 months and I don’t have a strong urge to reach for one right now.

Right now my reading material consists more of online material than physical material. I’m also realizing that I still read a lot, just not in the form of a book. I read ‒in no particular order‒ online news articles, instagram posts, webtoons, cereal boxes, instruction manuals, subtitles, street signs, etc. I think my shortening attention span has something to do with why I read what I read now.

I really wish I had the time and patience to read classics, nonfiction, and poetry. Those are the types of readings that I read the least but I think I would benefit the most out of. For longer texts, I like having a physical copy.

Reading, a simple term yet so complex. We learn to read then we read to learn. Reading is nothing more than a part of life. Even for the less fortunate who have not been granted the ability to read, nor see. For the people who may not see, they may read braille. For the people who may not read, they can in fact still read. They may read body languages, emotions, scenarios. Reading is not limited to words, it can expand to reading images still or moving at vast speed.
Reading can be done by simply looking out a window and admiring the littlest things. Thinking about how great nature is, how every living thing whether it is inanimate or not, they serve a purpose. The purpose of the Carolina Reapers is to produce fruit; to think of what kind of chemical reactions are going inside the fragile plant! To think of how every cell accepts its fate: death.
Again, people have different mindsets. Some may not even think about what is happening with the plant. Then there are others who have conducted research and stored their data in a book. Then there are the special types of groups, the authors who want to extend this information to children. They do so by writing the book appealing to their desired audience; with pictures and characters that may seem relatable. This is where my relationship with reading began.
Growing up I had my own personal library in the corner of my room. Nothing was more relaxing than a warm Friday night in the summer. The sun had just set and was feeling the glory that I had survived another week of school. It was now time to sit down in my reading chair with my autumn colored lamp to my left and my bookshelf to my right. Reading each page was me diving more into the story and being right next to the protagonist. My relationship with reading was overall well until I had reached high school.
Reading for fun no longer felt like an option, instead like slave work. Forced to read uncomfortable stories in exchange for a grade was absolute agony. This was a recurring feeling for two consecutive years until I made a return to Barnes and Nobles. Nothing more satisfying than opening the book and being excited for what story that awaits you. Reading was finally a passion again.

I’ve always been fond of reading, whether my reading be with an actual hard copy or an online copy/excerpt. I, for the most part, like to have a hard copy so that I'm in the present and am focusing on the story and not tempted to switch pages or apps as I would do online. For either a book copy or online copy I will, too, sometimes use audios to help me concentrate or understand the background if there's specific accents. I have most recently enjoyed reading fiction over the years, fiction to me inspires many creative thoughts or ideas for myself or others even if I don't share such figments, although, I can say the same about nonfiction. I like to read nonfiction that shows a person's endeavors or past they've grown from to form a sense of the different upbringings or cultures, like in the book “White boy Shuffle” where the main character's mom sends him to live in a “lesser neighborhood”so the protagonist would understand the difference he had. As of now, however, I do not take the time to sit and read books that are fiction or nonfiction, despite wanting to finish my book list. The only writings I have been reading, however, are social media posts that are reflecting on our own current worldly situations. I’ve mainly tried to learn more holistically rather than learn more fictional stories and otherwise I’m stumped with having a drive to read and don't seem to make time in my day.
