I’ve decided to base my walking research on the route from 179th and Hillside to St. John’s University. This is a walk I take almost every morning. The area transitions from urban to suburban, then back to urban. When I first get off the bus on Hillside, I am always met with honking cars, vehicles speeding past, and a variety of different smells. As I proceed down 179th Street, the noise decreases, and there are no longer commercial buildings, just churches, schools, and homes. When I get closer to the school, the volume of traffic increases again because of the large intersection and highway nearby.

Walking Research: Rules Of The Area

When first starting the walk, I think some of the implicit rules are more of the known traffic rules that are known by pedestrians. For example, don’t cross the street when the light is green for the cars, and the stop hand is on the screen of the crosswalk machine. I think that even though everyone knows this, it doesn’t stop them from crossing the street when it’s not their turn because they think that they can make it. These notions add to the urban feel of Hillside. Everyone is in a rush to get to their destinations, which is a characteristic mostly seen in the city. The rules begin to shift once you reach the more suburban area of the walk; the cars are not noisy in the residential area, and since there are mostly stop signs, the pedestrians are given the right of way. As I was approaching a crosswalk, the car stopped before I even got on the street, and waved its hand, signaling for me to cross. The attitude of the divers and pedestrians is calmer on Edgerton Blvd than compared to the hillside, and they tend to follow the rules more on Edgerton.

161st Street – Hillside Avenue, 1934

Hillside was originally strictly rural, but it underwent a great transformation in the 1900s. Due to the shift in modes of transportation, the electric trolley allowed more people access to Hillside and connected Hillside more directly to the rest of New York City. One hundred years later, the remnants of the formerly rural area remain. This development explains why the main road on Hillside has only shops and businesses, and some apartments.

Walking Research: social interactions

Depending on the area of my walk, different types of interactions were promoted. On Hillside, people are often in a rush to their destinations. I can tell because there was this one man, walking fast with his head down, which indicates that he was in a rush to get to his destination, and didn’t want any distractions or interactions. However, on the 179th, the people are more likely to interact with each other and say hello. I saw two instances of these on my walk. The first was a lady with her two dogs and a man, standing outside an apartment building, talking. The second instance was a man with a golden retriever and a woman pushing a carriage; when I first saw them, I remember assuming they were married. These types of interactions can not be seen on Hillside; everyone is in more of a rush to get to their destination, catch the next bus or train.

I think everyone who lives in the area feels welcome because there are no restrictions.

The police, ambulances, and public transportation all have some type of authority over everyone else. I saw an ambulance hold the traffic and gain a passageway because it has right of way in emergencies. I believe that everyone has the right of entry into this space, especially the residents and those who work in the area. I think that the only people who are not allowed into Hillside are those who have criminal intent. I think this is due to keeping the peace in the location, also to ensure that those reaching their destination on Hillside are not in danger

I think some emotional and psychological capacity is needed to gain entry into this space, because the person must be aware of what's going on in the background to keep safe. Those who are not from the area, or have never been there will feel left out because they might not know how to use the buses or trains. Those who work in the area, our sirens were on. Secondly, the buses have their own bus lane, which shows that they have some type of authority. The authority of these figures is demonstrated through the use of sirens, or the driving of the buses on their lane, and the honking of the cars that are wrongfully on the lane.

The economic factors that determine entry into this space are whether a person can purchase items in the shops on Hillside, if a person can afford the public transportation, and secondly, if the person can afford to rent or buy a home on Hillside. I don’t think there are any invisible costs in the area, unless someone gets a traffic ticket from the cameras.

The street on Hillside, and closer to St. John’s, is dirtier than that on 179th Street. This reflects that the people on Hillside and closer to St John’s are just trying to get to their destination, and don’t really care about the environment or the aesthetic of the location. In a tunnel near Gate One of St. John’s, I found two empty containers on the ground, a Dunkin cup, and a Starbucks cup. It also smelled horrible in there. Meanwhile, the people in the residential area want their area to remain clean and fresh, this can be seen by the lack of litter and the freshly mowed lawns. The commuters and travelers in this location don’t care about the health of the area or keeping it clean, while the residents of the area do.

Having gotten used to the area as a commuter college student, I believe I may have had my own bias when conducting this walking research. Most likely by making connections between things I witnessed in the walking research, and other experiences I have had in the past. So I think I may go into the space with an expectation of things I will see or experience.

I might make assumptions about the people I always see walking in the area every morning, and make the assumption that they are residents of a house nearby, when they could really be from anywhere.

I could also have a conversation or interview the older residents I always see walking in the morning. I could ask them when they moved to the area, and why they chose this area.

The local businesses have flyers out on the outside of buildings, on poles, and in such areas. There aren’t any buildboards in the area, but the stores have banners in front of the store that they can put information on.

I started to pay attention to my breathing, my steps, and even the muscles in my legs. Walking research turned my ordinary walking experience into critical awareness.

Walking Research: Referring to Springgay and Truman

Before conducting my walking research, I re-read the chapters from Springgay and Truman, focusing on their themes of place, sensory experiences, embodiment, and rhythm. During my walk, I noticed that my body is more tense and rigid when I'm about to cross the street, and more relaxed when I'm in a more secure position, like the middle of the sidewalk. Springgay and Truman would say that this experience is embodiment, and that walking is tied to more things than just the location, like race, gender, class, and history. During my walk, I was also able to find the change of rhythm, which I found shocking. When I was walking in the more urban areas, like on Hillside, everything felt more fast-paced; however, when I was on Edgerton Blvd, everything felt slower, and I even caught myself walking at a slower pace. Focusing on these key themes during my walk really showed me how walking can be the formation of a connection with the environment around us and awareness of the most minute details that we don't even think about.

Life As A Freshmen Commuter

I usually spend most of my day here, at St. John’s. As a commuter, I spend the majority of my time on campus, and during this time, I socialize with people, making friends and forming lasting relationships. Fresh out of high school, the biggest shift was taking the active role of talking to people and making friends, so for many people, rather than being stuck in a classroom with the same fixed number of people. College is a community constucted of the student body. Their voices must be heard. As a freshman, I feel as if my voice is heard in some and not in others. It is harder to speak with the chair of certain departments, and harder to get in contact with them, in a timely manner. Shouldn’t all aspects of college and its departments be accessible to students in order to ensure their success? Other than some issues that he faced in my public speaking class with my fuckng professor, who has a different view on what the registrar says, I think I have well adjusted myself. As an extrovert, I did not have any trouble making friends or talking to people, but felt challenged with managing my time appropriately. Overall, I felt like the professors are very, very accommodating and like, very passionate about their work and how they want to help students and how they want to see them succeed. College has helped me learn that passion is everything and that you can gain a lot of things simply by starting a conversation. As the school years progress, I’m excited to be an orientation leader, an RA. I think it will help my character develop further. To any other 17-year-old incoming freshmen, my advice to you is to stay on campus for a while, even after your classes, because I feel like simply starting a random conversation with anybody will truly impact your college experience in such a good way.

The journey on the map begins with my entrance into St. John’s University. When entering college, I came with the rhetorical skills I had acquired from high school, hoping that they would be enough to get me through the first semester. After starting my classes, the second destination on the map, I began to navigate my courses, analyzing what would be required of me and preparing myself for the road ahead. During that time, I picked up reading again as a hobby because I knew that I would be doing a lot of it, and I wanted to hone the skill of comprehending text at a faster pace. Then came the actual work, the third destination. I would start doing work in my classes, like this one, and my public speaking class, which requires the use of rhetorical skills, and I thought I had gotten the hang of it. By the fourth destination, I thought I had succeeded in my skill of delivering good speeches and writing eloquent papers, in a sense, getting my rhetorical licence. Then I ran into some trouble. I noticed that my writing wasn’t improving; it remained the same from high school. It was sufficient, but the format and my diction remained stagnant. Which brings me to my fifth destination, where I reached out for help. I called my cousin and asked him how I could work on my writing and improve my rudimentary writing style. After applying his advice, I started to receive feedback from professors about my assignment, like the walking research project, and I noticed that my grades were good, and I wasn’t doing as badly as I had originally thought. That felt like a small accomplishment that made me feel better as a writer and a speaker. Now, on my map, I am currently looking forward to my next semester, preparing for finals. During this semester, I have noticed that my rhetorical skills have improved from high school level skills to a more advanced style. Next year, I will be taking legal writing and research, which is why it is the next destination on my map, and I hope that taking that course further expands my knowledge and skills as a rhetorician. Lastly, the presents on the map represent future failures, obstacles, and successes i have as a writer, because they are unknown, but destined to occur.
