Meeting between allied world leaders to help to discuss the reorganization of Europe. Some of these included how they would divide Germany. Trying to stop wars like this from ever happening again with diplomatic relations. One big thing that was tried to create was the Untied Nations. Another was the redrawing of Europe's borders and a major talking point was what to do with Poland. Although terms were met there these terms would be one of the main things that would bring the United States and USSR to disagreements and adding fuel to the cold war between them.

This was the world's first use of the atomic bomb ever. The United States was the first country to develop a bomb this devastating. The Untied States invested tons and tons of time and money to be able to do this. These bombings led to Japan being bombed into submission and surrender. These bombings had a short but an even more longer lasting effect on the shape of the world. This show of power heightened the arms race between various world powers trying to obtain these new nuclear weapons. This would go on to create organizations to help lessen nuclear weapons being made.

Winston Churchill went to Fulton Missouri to appeal to the common man instead of bigger cities and also being the home state of the president. During this speech Winston Churchill warned about the influence of communism growing in the Soviet Union and around the world. He spoke about the problems that such influence caused and called for the need to promote democracy around the world. This could be seen as one of the events that threw the United States into a cold war. And also one of the most significant speeches in the 20th century.

Truman's hopes were to find the non-communism countries where there is already a civil war and to give them military aid to fight off the communists to help them win the civil war. It was known as the Truman Doctrine and this was the first time it was ever used. This doctrine works and successfully keeps Greece non communist. This hope was also trying to gain more alliances that would oppose the communism and help their fight for democracies around the world.

This is how communism spreads so the United States and other democracies around the world are scared about what all this can bring. We give massive amounts of money to help them rebuild to try and stop them from being communists, hoping to buy them to become democracies since they are economically well off. However, the allies' response to this blockade was sending supplies over and dropping them from planes so they wouldn't starve. This was a response to the growing tensions between all nations involved. This marked a significant shift in global politics following World War 2 showing a "community" now all fighting for one thing containing communism. This would help the MAD principal and prevent war from breaking out. The Warsaw Pact from the Soviets would later counter this.

Trying to stop the spread of communism without the start of World War III. The loss of China scares the United States and we are losing the Cold War. This leads to a panic across the United States. There is a high concern for national security with spies being in the United States. But this turns out of control and then they are thinking that everyone can be a spy. It shows up in many documents across the United States. McCarthyism is the worst of this. He is a nobody so he wants to take the spotlight however he can. He walks into the Senate floor and says he has a list of all of the communist spies and runs on this saying if he wins he will get rid of all of these communist sympathizers. The whole country gets wrapped up and makes it worse. Eventually, he is discredited but not before causing mass panic in the United States.

They both implement their own systems of government helping to further their own politics. In 1950 they invaded South Korea and caught them off guard. They then race in with the help of the United Nations to help the South from the North Koreans. With an amphibious attack, the United States helped to regain the South and then marched into the North. This in turn brings in China and its one million soldiers now the United States is outnumbered. The war now draws out 2 more years and then it settled into a stalemate and then there is a cease-fire with North Korea and South Korea ending the fighting but not ending it completely.

The hydrogen bomb had never been used or proven that it would work. It is thousands of times stronger than an atomic bomb. It was called the "Ivy Mike" test it was the first time this was ever used. This was estimated to be 10.4 megatons of explosive power. This was the first successful test of hydrogen bombs and one of the most powerful explosions ever created. They used the same physics that the sun uses to create so much power and energy. With this test there was a impact on Bikini Atoll's ecosystem with long lasting ecological damage. This increased the arms race between the USSR and USA this would now also create new ways to deliver nukes better than the other heightening tensions even more.

With the oil in Iran, it threatened BP and the British government because of this the intelligence agencies overthrew the government to get oil back into hands that they could trust. Also in Guatemala, they overthrew the government, and there were land reforms that hurt us corporations so to get what the US wanted it created a coup. The long term effects are still seen to this day. Both of these countries were communist also another driving factor in trying to overthrow their government. This marked the beginning of the space age and sparked the space race between the US and USSR. It was a small satellite that only transmitted a radio signal but still showed the Soviet Union's understanding and implementation of new technologies that the US didn't have at the time. This in turn helped to create many space programs around the world.

The plane has really long wings to try and stop radars from getting them and are also used to fly so high that they couldn't be shot down with missiles. But now that they were a communist regime it wasn't the United States didn't like them being in their backyard. CIA rounds up anti-communist exiles to try and overthrow the government that the United States secretly trained in Guatemala to overthrow Castro. They are then dropped off at the Bay of Pigs. The original plan was to provide air support, but the United States never did, and they were demolished. They were captured and interrogated and then everything was made public that the United States did. This would now open up the Cuban Missile Crisis when they gave Cuba Missiles and the United States was uneasy about how close nuclear warheads were.

This is the closest we have ever been to a thermonuclear war. After the bay of pigs invasion the Cubans wanted protection from the United States and the USSR were more than happy to give them weapons to protect them. With this the United States now has the USSR's missiles only 120 miles away. We have U2 spy planes going overhead and taking pictures of what was going on in Cuba. It was then found that there were many bases that could house nuclear missiles. The treaty was done backdoor where the Russians had to take it out of Cuba, the United States had to promise not to invade Cuba, and lastly although not publicly known the Untied States had to take our missiles out of Greece and Turkey.

This was one of the driving factors into starting the Vietnam War. Vietnam used to be a colony under France and they had a revolution and won and now were an independent country. The new leader was a communist and the United States didn't like it. So we put in a democratic leader in the south and there was a communist leader in the North. This now turned into a civil war between communists and capitalists. This is a proxy war between the United States and also the USSR. But then the United States Navy was attacked by the North Vietnamese boats. It is unclear the chain of events that happened. It is believed that there are 2 attacks. The first time it is thought that a torpedo was heard but nothing happened some think it didn't happen. But the second time it was believed to happen. Now the United States were mad and then the LBJ went to Congress and was given basically a blank check to defend the Navy however he wants to. Then it begins to build and build and build until it blows into a full fledged war.

Scared a communist leader would come into power the United States intervened. LBJ sent 23,000 US marines to the Dominican Republic to stop the establishment of the Communist regime. This was controversial and also just added fuel to the fire about LBJ being unpopular and supporting war and people said that it violated exactly what we stand for. But others argued that it needed to happen to prevent the spread of communism so close to our borders. This deployment would help to stabilize the Dominican Republic but also sparked the debate about is the United States doing too much and abusing it's power and morals in the Cold War.

The USSR and Cubans helped the communist movement of the People's Movement for Liberation of Angola (MPLA) with help to establish a communist government in Angola. Aid included weapons, training, and even military aid. The Cubans helped directly with providing troops and other military weapons. This significantly tipped the power to the MPLA. This ultimately helped them create government under the "control" of the USSR. This heightened tensions with countries in Africa because most of them were not necessarily centralized and this showed that the Soviets had and could capture countries all over the world.

If that country recognized China as an independent nation the government would let them rent a panda for a million a year. This was after China had cut relations with Moscow. These pandas helped to show diplomatic relations and can even be shown toady.

Now communist Vietnam and communist China fight over border disputes. China thinks they are going to destroy them. It's a draw and it's fairly short and it only lasts a year. A showing that it's not always communism vs non-communism. Vietnam sees them as a threat as they have always been oppressed by the Chinese.

The United States is a big ally to Iran. We have helped to prop up a monarchy. We did this because they have oil and many riches. We have helped them stop coming to communism. The Sha who is the king is very modern and also Western. He wants capitalism and many of the West's ideals. He is overthrown. Now that he is overthrown it is now a theocracy he's called the idotola. They start implementing Islamic law which is a 360. The new government wants the Sha back and now the Iran hostage crisis has started. The US embassy was stormed and they took 60 American staff hostage and held them hostage for more than 1 year. Jimmy Carter is the president at the time and he sends in a rescue mission. This was a failed mission and it wrecked his presidency. The hostages are released the day after Regan became president.

The Soviets pounced at the idea of the being able to back the Marxist government when there was a rebellion. The government at the time asked for military assistance to suppress the rebellion and maintain control over their population. The Soviets wanted this country as a buffer state in the region because they were scared of Islamic ideology spreading to their neighboring friendly countries. They also didn't want Afghanistan to be another country that the United States backed. This also had implications on the Cold war. The United States backed the other side with weapons and financial aid. The soviets eventually withdrew in 1989, but this only added to the arms race between the two.

They did so in another coup. This was called "Operation Urgent Fury" this was done so we basically didn't have another Cuban Missile Crisis with Grenada being so close. The US government did so to restore order and democracy, but it was very controversial and some people thought we intervened when we shouldn't have. This was a successful coup and it established a democratic government in Grenada. This also showed the shear power of the United States especially in the Caribbean.

They had been going on for weeks when students and workers called for more freedoms and to end corruption in the government. They declared martial law and moved the military to take care of the protestors and remove them. They used live ammunition and tanks which led to many casualties some estimated thousands were killed and many more were injured or arrested. This sparked worldwide condemnation and led to outrage that a government would do such a thing. This created repercussions for China's international relations and showed the effects that an oppressive government could have.
