My target audience consists of male and female young adults from the age of 16 to 21. I aim to attract to both genders but from questionnaires that I have done, my magazine will most likely have a male dominant reading which, stereotypically, would be main reading gender.
With a music genre, such as rock, comes a male dominant scene and culture which I believe is important to maintain and challenge. For example, I wish to challenge it by implementing feminine details in my magazine but keeping it balanced with masculine details as well.
The key thing to attract audiences is stereotypes. For example, a rock magazine will always have bold people on the front cover with a dark colour scheme. Stereotypes allow people to quickly differentiate between what is or is not for them.
When researching stereotypes, you soon find out what people within that certain stereotype like the most and I allowed this to influence how I dressed the artist on my front cover, contents page and double page spread. One of the key topic that people within the rock culture like is creepy and dark movies and from this, came my inspiration to dress my model in The Joker based clothing. For example, purples and black along with the green hair. This then attracts people into reading due to wondering why the artist has been dressed to reflect The Joker. I also decided my model should wear relatively heavy eye make-up and a 'pasty' foundation to fully create the look that I was aiming for.

When attracting an audience, it is important you are using colours relative to that specific audience. For the rock audience, I chose colours that are dark and bold. All colours have different meanings behind them and so that also helps with the overall vibe that the magazine portrays. All of the colours which I decided to pick are gender neutral colours allowing readers to know that it doesn't matter what their gender is, it's aimed at them.

Red is a colour which shows anger and love. Both emotions and meanings contrast each other greatly and so is suitable for a rock magazine because the stereotype of rock fans is that they are aggressive and so to use red to not only show aggression but also love, it appeals to different demographics.

Black and White highly contrast each other because black is usually used to represent ‘evil’ where as white is used to represent purity. Black is also the main colour used to represent rock due to it being the dark ‘colour’. It is also a colour that is said to match everything and so is the easiest colour to use in any magazine.

This is one of the most important features of your magazine because it attracts the target age of your audience. For example, I used short sentences which regularly ended with exclamation marks at the end to appeal to young adults. During the course of my front cover and contents page, it is mostly informal language and then in the double-page spread, it is a safe mix of both. This means that those reading don't have to be high intellectual it is fitting for everyone to read. During editors note I made references that would be known to a younger generation and so it made the magazine seem a little more personal.
I also used a mix of direct address and none. This allows the reader to get dragged into the article but not so much that it confuses them.

I used an array of fonts throughout my magazine. These included ones from DaFont.com and just general fonts such Arial. I used fonts called Nervous and Bad Coma because I feel as though those are what fit best for my magazine. The other fonts used were Times Roman and Arial. The reason for picking Arial was because, not only is it aesthetically pleasing to look at, but it is also said to help dyslexic people read easier which allows me to reach a wider target audience.

This is because, in the article, it talks about how the artist basically gambled her job away and how she almost lost all of her money to gambling. This prop is also something related to the artist and not a random prop which makes the article more appealing and person.

The use of layout shows the genre and the audience that it is appealing to. From this fact, I decided to have a mix between a crammed and organised layout.
My front cover, for example, is quite crammed beside where my model is. This is to draw attention to the dominant image and dominant sell-line. This also allows it to be appealing to young adults whereas if it were messier, it'd be younger teenagers. When it came to my contents page, everything was once again crammed until it came to the dominant image. However, in my double-page spread, it is a lot more organised to juxtapose the personality of the artist.
During my magazine survey, I found out that the majority of people liked a bold and messy look but also liked organised, which lead me to create the layout that I did.
