African Americans refused to take the bus which cost the company a fortune. It was one of the first large scale protest against segregation. The boycott started because a women named Rosa Parks was arrested because she wouldn't give up her seat. The boycott started Dec 5, 1955, and ended Dec 20, 1956.

The school was all white and they were African American. They had to be escorted into the school by U.S. soldiers. The governor of Arkansas Orval Faubus didn't allow national guard to protect them. This happened September 4, 1957.
