‘What you don’t know can’t hurt you.’ Today I know more, and it hurts me. I know more about slavery and about the life of people of African descent in Guadeloupe. And once you know something, you cannot unknow it, just as the tree of oblivion could not make the African slaves forget who they were, their identity and their culture. But it is what you do with this knowledge that is important and I hope I will be able to pass on what I have learned today.

Riding the bus with local people, talking to them in marketplaces, eating Creole food also gave a glimpse into the life of Guadeloupeans. It is only the beginning and I hope to learn much more. And of course, not to forget…

This day made me a bit sad: does the human ever learn? How many more ethnic groups must be destroyed? Why does so many tribes/clans/races concider themselves so much better, that they have the entitlement to eliminate or enslave others?
This is unfortunately not only history.
Hoping for better future...

Ignorance is dangerous. Slavery was a product of ignorance, greed and lack of humanity. And how sad and terrifuying era that was, it has brought many cultures together. Like in the exhebition today, you can think of it by two different ancles: the exploitation of the black people, and all the rich culture that has born from several cultures combining.

Somehow I startet to think about holocaust during the 2nd world war. There were similar features in behaviour of man. Except holocaust's only goal was to destroy one humanrace.

A man's skin has colour. It's only a color. No matter what colour. It doesn't define man, culture does. And man defines culture.

Today I learned about culture. I learned that culture is what surrounds you, it´s your past, you present and your future. It's what you believe in, what your parents taught you... and it´s also ho you became. Your history, the history of your ancestors are a part of your culture, the other part is what you did with that heritage and how you represent and transform it in your own habits. The example of slavery and how it influenced culture of Guadeloupe.

Quote: "Freedom is too much food for a Negros stomach" - Napoleon.

Aggression has many forms, abuse always raises its ugly head here or there - we are living it right now, the Ukraine has been invaded, I've read. As absurd as it is. Perhaps we do forget, perhaps history teaches us nothing. Or now is one of those times when "we shall never surrender" (Winston Churchill)?
