Why Asians Migrated

The major migration of Asians from Uganda to neighboring countries started in 1972. A dictator general named Idi Amin had become President of Uganda. Amin claims that in a dream, God appeared and commanded him to exorcise the entire Asian Ugandan population. He believed that Asians in Uganda that formed the middle class were deliberately slowing the economy, promoting corruption, and purposefully denying to integrate with the Ugandan way of life. Idi also stated that he was “Giving Uganda back to the ethnic Ugandans.” The rest of Africa was embarrassed by Amin because he displayed how easily a corrupted dictator can rise to power. He was an advocate for Indiophobia which is a fear and hate of people of Indian heritage. Nearly 60,000 Asians were forced to emigrate to a new country. Everyone lost their jobs and homes. Luckily outside countries were accepting of these new immigrants. The United Kingdom permitted 27,000 of them to emigrate to Great Britain. The other 43,000 emigrated to Canada, India, Kenya, and Pakistan.

There were multiple reasons why Asian Ugandans fled Uganda in 1972. The core motive for emigration was that they were ordered by the dictator and President of Uganda. Idi Amin gave them 90 to leave the country, “or they will find themselves sitting on the fire.” Furthermore, this dictator was gaining power and leading the country through corruption. Young men armed with guns prowled the streets searching for potential dissidents. In addition, law enforcement officers that’s weren’t believed to be loyal had their heads smashed by sledgehammers. Many questioned Idi Amin’s sanity and the general consensus was that it can only get worse from here. All these factors contribute to the argument to leave Uganda.

In 1978, Dictator General Idi Amin attempted to annex the Kagera Region of Tanzania. Tanzania responded and captured Kampala, the capital of Uganda, and removed Idi from power. In 1986, a man named Yoweri Museveni assumed power and invited all Asians and Indians to return. He realized the role that Asians played in Ugandas economy. This is an example of a return migration after being forced to migrate.

In 1972, after Amin ordered the expulsion of Asians from Uganda, many migrants fled to nearby countries. These included Kenya, Pakistan, and Libya. A possible reason why they immigrated to nearby countries is so travel would be as cheap and fast as possible. Many were intimidated by the cruel actions of Idi Amin and seemed to leave the country as soon as possible. Other Central African countries realized that Amin was gaining to much power and allowed Asian Ugandans to seek refuge on their land.

Of the 27,000 that migrated to England, most moved to London. Immigrants move to large cities for more job opportunities. In addition, they seek more accessible education. Many also feel a higher sense of safety in a large city, therefore, immigrant who had death threats made against them would be inclined to move to a highly developed and populated city.

4. Urban Residents Are Less Migratory Than Inhabitants of Rural Areas

When Idi Amin ordered the forced migration of all Asians from Uganda, this law did not apply. Asian Ugandans from urban and rural areas hurried to emigrate the country. Idi Amin threaten their lives if they didn’t leave within 90 days, therefore, everyone left as soon as possible. Whether they lived in a city or the countryside, everyone left together. A few days after the announcement, public transportation systems were overcrowded. The surge of emigrants created a massive backlog in plane flights and bus trips. By the end of the 90 days, almost everyone was gone. It is believed that around 10 Asian Ugandans remained in Uganda as a form of protest. Overall, Asians in Uganda left whether they were in an urban or rural area because of the threats made by Idi Amin.

In the case of the 1970s migration of Asians from Uganda, this law does not apply. Families migrated because they feared for themselves and their children. Young adults did migrate at a higher rate then families because every migrated together. Young adults and families were both being threatened and forced to leave. Families left quickly because they wanted to protect the future of their children and weren’t going to risk staying. Young adults did the same except most don’t have kids to protect. Finally, this law does not apply because all people, whether a family or young adults, were forced to emigrate.
