You hear varying opinions from many people (Lecturers, peers, influence from the rest of the class etc.) but I'm proud to say that not one of my work is a result of another person's influence. After all, I am in school to please myself and not the lecturers. It is important to follow your own heart, and apply selective hearing to things that you know make sense to you — and filter out those that would just be empty noises misleading your thoughts. Choose your own path and you will own your work — be it good or bad.

Feels like I’m neither here Nor there, if I’m really made for this. I think the sense of purpose in what I’m doing is lacking resolve. I do know I want to improve myself further in motion graphics aspect, but the fear and doubt paralyses me. Just Trying to just really ground myself in this uncertain times. It’s just like how everyone is confident in what they know and uncertain about what they don’t or do well in.

I’d spend at least a whole morning trying not to instinctively reach for my phone. All along I’ve always been drawn to the silence, where I tend to favour being by myself rather than make small talk. But during this period, it’s like it has heightened?

Sitting in silence has always helped me mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In the last year or so I’ve learnt to become more religious, where I sit in silence to meditate and journal down my own thoughts. I’ve been doing something called Lectio Divina, which is a practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer. And that alone has helped me to lift whatever burdens off my shoulders, including burdens which I never knew I shouldered.

Solitude & letting go_ Ironically, because I prefer to be in solitary, it has also been one of my biggest ‘gateway’ for pressure. Being alone makes way for self doubt and insecurities. Unfortunately, I think I’m someone who seeks validation in the things I do (because of said insecurities). Which in turn, makes me fear failure and judgement. When I do fail, I’d be too scared to make that same mistake again that I continue staying in my comfort zone. I won’t stop harping over it and I'd keep blaming myself. It’s something I’m trying to work on because I wanna learn how to let go and learn, and also to do things for myself and doing it because it makes me happy, not because it makes someone else happy. Being comfortable alone also stops me from reaching out and taking risks.

Sense of self and identity_

Despite being with myself so often, I’ve never really been able to pin-point what exactly makes me, me. I’ve never really had a certain style in design, nor do I excel in a particular medium. I gravitate towards a certain style, look and feel, but I think it has never really been me-me.

I believe that having a space that I can call my own, that resonated with me, would somehow bring me some form of peace — and it really did.

This project might not be design related, but it is something that I've been wanting to do and I am glad that I got some time off the grid, and actually acted upon it. This, however, is not final. This is probably a project that will be ongoing for some time now and I look forward to making this space better.

Basically you have to set 30 mins aside at the end of each day, and start drawing whatever you feel without controlling how it will turn out, or how your thoughts flow.

Through this exercise I learned to let go of the need to control my thoughts and the control of the outcome.

Although this is something that I have adopted to help me reflect on my daily life, I find it very applicable to the design process. Very often I find myself very fixated on controlling the process and outcome after getting a brief… Now I’m starting to understand what it means by letting go of control, experiment, and you will be shocked by the result.

Every year, I write a letter to myself , and this time, i decided to respond to it, imagining that I am from the future.

I also challenged myself to make this film as intimate as possible. Though I found it intimidating, I voiced over my response, and filmed mostly ECUs. I edited and filmed in a way to keep things ambiguous as we truly don't really know what will happen in the future. I've never edited to classical music in my life and found it quite a challenge to make it captivating.

PS: Since we are not really allowed to go out, not all footages in this video is by me, but I hope I can replace them in the future.

I hope you enjoy it! :-)

Moving forward for the next few months til school starts again in September, I plan to work on something I am interested in that will help strengthen my mastery alongside risk, play and experimenting. I want to work on quick designs maybe thrice a week (depends as I don’t want to think of it as a chore) to continue being in the flow of design and also learning to think quickly and being more decisive.

I’ve tried working on this project and honestly, it was quite fun! (hope it stays that way) Basically, I used the word generator to generate a random word and based on the word, I come up with a design. Its a quick maybe 1 to 3 hours max process as I want to train my thinking and making decision more swiftly (sometimes I take too long just choosing an image/typeface to use so-). It also allows me to improve my mastery at the same time.

For now, my designs are more typography/image based, but in the future I might dabble onto illustrations and others too. I hope that while doing these, it can be added on to my portfolio too since my portfolio now is kind of more character design/illustration based (I got pointed out during interviews) Thats why I wanted to make my portfolio more diverse through these hopefully.

Feel free to give feedbacks here :-)
https://padlet.com/tanpeiqi/workinprogress

Was pretty inspired by what Kenneth shared during our last session, which was to stop expecting so much from ourselves but instead, we should hope for us to do better. This way, it makes us stop feeling disappointed when we fail to "achieve" our expectations that we set. Hoping, on the other hand, is a more positive thinking that cuts us some slack but it also pushes us forward to always improve.

I spent most of my week working (6 out of 7 days) because I still could not find it in my to say no to my bro. I was very stressed out because I could not do anything if I did not say NO to work. So this week I said no. finally. HAHAHA. I'm going to stand firm. No means no. I'm going to spend the free days I have working on this Instagram 9x9 post that I started doing since last week's encounter session. Hopefully I complete it asap! Hopefully, not a must. Not going to put stress on myself. Would be good if I do complete it during my 3 days break this week, but if not, it's okay. Cutting myself some slack by hoping to finish, not putting expectations on my aching shoulders. (It's been 4 days of stiff neck, anyone got any suggestions on what I can do to get rid of the pain? lmk hahaha)

We’re thankful for food, so we can taste, we’re thankful for music to get us through times, but we’re never really been thankful for sound, the sounds that we rely on 24/7, 365 days

From the simplest things to an alarm clock, we could be in anyway thankful for the invention of products, of creations—But when do you hear us say—“I’m thankful for the alarm clock sound” or “I’m thankful for the sound a toaster makes to tell me my bread is ready”?

We don’t give sound, credits it should deserve, yet we only tend to classify sound as noise when it doesn’t work in our favour. How about the times it worked in our favour? How about the times when sound convenience us?

This short 1 minute animation, aims to prove the relationship of sound to us—the value of sound exactly is to us.

(Watch and listen to animation)

We are so used to pairing things together, associating what you hear with what you see.

In The Brink Of Death directs my attention to the insentient tangibles that surrounds us everyday. The recurring nature of life and death of the objects is what I am seeking to uncover for the sake of an alternative contemplatation and interpretation.

Though often neglected, these objects metaphorically reflects on the cyclical circle of life that humans are constricted to.

The birth, the inevitable scarring, the sickness and the long awaited death. More than we know it, these objects shares the same cycle with us.

This body of photographs exhibits the objects whom’s days are numbered — to showcase the value or lack thereof that remains with the object, once it’s time is up.

Observation

Pretty sure many would have heard this phrase at least once during the pandemic. Looking back at what was going on during the circuit breaker, I observed that people around me were more cautious on where they were touching. People also refrain from something as simple as a handshake and touch has slowly become associated with a sense of negativity. Little do we know that touch is very important.

Did you know?

Touch affects us every single day and everyone receives tactile information every second of the day. Physical contact and touch is important in early development, communication, relationships and even fighting diseases(ironically). Touch is especially important in infants and the lack of it can be devastating, proved from the experiment done by Rene Spitz. Touch is something people not think about until the ability is gone. Covid-19 made us miss the simple act of hugging our grandparents or grandkids and this is because people craves for things they do not have.

“So many elderly folk crave human touch and their one only human touch ever is their hair stylist.”

Perspective
Touch is perhaps the most overlooked sense until now and we want to take this chance to inform people on the importance of touch through a magazine all about it! The magazine will be sold in the midst of the pandemic as it is so valuable right now! It is all about the notion of selling touch and even being a replacement and alternative for people who craves touch and to be obsessed over with.

The brief given was to create a visual identity for a charity who is either involved in the support of people with mental health issues, and/or engaged in the prevention of mental health issues.

After researching on the different organisations and projects tackling issues on mental health, I came upon a whitespace of a dads’ postnatal mental health condition — Parental Postnatal Depression (PPND). Many would know about how some mothers goes through postnatal depression but do they know that dads are also prone to this very condition?

About 26% of dads suffer from depression during the 3 to 6 month period after the baby's arrival but is largely overlooked. There is a lack of awareness of this condition and men are also subjected to gender expectations, where they have to tough it out, thus many dads do not express what they are feeling. There is also an overall lack of support for dads postnatal mental health in Singapore. If untreated, it can affect father-infant relationship and lead to serious consequences in the cognitive development of their child.

Thus, this is where Dad Code comes in.

Dad Code is a new protocol to screen new dads for Parental Postnatal Depression (PPND) launched by the Ministry of Health.

We hope to raise awareness on the postnatal mental health in dads and provide timely support.
