In this scene of the Tempest, Miranda is enlightened and learns about where she is from.

Miranda:

You have often
Begun to tell me what I am, but stopp'd
And left me to a bootless inquisition,
Concluding 'Stay: not yet.'

Prospero:

The hour's now come;
The very minute bids thee ope thine ear;
Obey and be attentive. Canst thou remember
A time before we came unto this cell?
I do not think thou canst, for then thou wast not
Out three years old...

Prospero goes on to tells her the story of how he was once a Duke of high esteem, fame and intelligence in Milan. He explains that his passion for education and studies caused him to lose interest in politics. With his attention focused on studies, Prospero’s attention was away from his duties as Duke; thus, providing his brother, Antonio, with the perfect opportunity to over throw him. Antonio overthrew Prospero with the help of the King of Naples. They drove Prospero and young Miranda out of Milan by raising an army to force them out or face death. With the help of the servant Gonzalo, they were able to escape onto a small boat with some food, clothing and books and head towards the magical island they were currently on.

Miranda's Reaction:

Prospero:

          Girl, you are my child. The only heir to the throne.

Miranda:

          So then why aren’t we living in Milan with our titles?

Prospero:
Well, my brother, Antonio, took advantage of me. At the time I was the prime duke and was renowned for my dignity and intelligence. He slowly began to convince the state to turn against me as I had neglected my duties for my studies. He was power hungry and wanted to be more than a Lord; he felt that my title as Duke was rightfully his.

Miranda

The Wrap Up

As millennials, we often feel disconnected to older classic literature and this is a great way for us to interpret the play. Helps us better understand the scene of the play as well as better visualize the characters’ emotions. I chose this scene in the Tempest, because it was a moment of growth and realization for Prospero and Miranda. Prospero has come to realize that his daughter is coming of age and he can no longer hide their past from her. Miranda is coming of age and is beginning to view life in a slightly different eye. This scene ultimately is a great example of a conversation that most of us have had with our fathers about our family history, which is another reason why I chose it because it is relatable.
