1)Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.
- When the father brought Joe (narrator) downstairs to the basement as a boy to teach him how to throw jabs and punches. His father told the him, "Be a man, stop with the tears; stop with the emotions. If your going to be a man, you got to learn how to dominate, control people and circumstances." is a perfect example to show how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.
2) Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity.
- One way men "do" and perform masculinity is when Joe played football. He played football knowing that is what showed to be a man. The game played the tough and strong part that he felt he didn't have on his own without the gear/helmet. Other ways aside from football can be other athletic sports which show the same results- six pack, muscles, buff, and such.
3) What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women?
- Men have to be more controlling and be better than women. The men end up treating women like they aren't nobodies because they need to act like their "tough" as if they don't need a women in their life.
4)What the relationship:
a)between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity?
- Sexism, homophobia, and masculinity relationships is when men/boys need to make sure they don't show their emotions, they don't tell no one they are sad, and definitely can't show that they are crying or want to cry. If they do any of that, then the other men/boys would "pick" on them, laugh, and judge. Furthermore, men have to "act" and be a certain way when it comes to women, they need to be punks to show their masculinity to the other guys.
b)between violence and masculinity?
- Masculinity and violence relationship is when men/boys have no other ways in showing their emotions but by only through violence.
5) What role does the media take in socializing masculinity?
- The role that media takes in socializing masculinity is when rappers and actors present that they have money, talk about hooking up with women, etc. The men in the movies showed off their money. Men compared what other men had at a certain age and the valuables that costed a lot of money which was the though of "being a man". Masculinity is viewed that it had to be an economic success.
6) Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film.
- One of the men's father in the film was not loving and emotionless towards him and so when the man had a child, he had to play the role as a father and mother because the mother was not around. Since he had to play that role, it taught him that he needed to be sensitive and loving and do what his own father couldn't do. When his son told him "Daddy, I'm sensitive", he opened up his eye to realization that it is okay to be a boy and talk about your feelings and he told his son "When I was your age, I wasn't able to cry but if you need to cry, I will cry with you." I believe that is a solution to showing young boys it is okay to show emotions because playing the "tough guy" as a young boy is not so fun, harsh, and hurting in the future.

1. Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.

Masculinity is socially constructed in our society from the moment boys are born. Boys are taught that men don't cry, never to let anyone shame them, fight back if someone hurts you, etc.

2. Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity.

Men perform masculinity by playing sports, playing violent video games, watching pornography that displays domination and/or bondage, etc.

3. What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women?

Masculinity impacts the relationship between men and women violently at times. Sometimes the things that men have been exposed to in their life, lead them to think it's okay to sexually assault a woman. They tend to demean them or disrespect them.

4. What the relationship:
a. between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity?
The relationship between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity is teaching boys to be rough. There's this perception, if boys are nice then they'll get bullied. They'll be considered soft or feminine. They'll get called names, like "gay" if they 're friends with boys who prefer the same sex.

b. between violence and masculinity?
Violence and masculinity have lead to more than 90% of homicides in the United States being males. We're facing one of the biggest crisis as a society. More brutal mass shootings are occurring now than ever before and it's linked to how men have been raised throughout their life.

5.What role does the media take in socializing masculinity?
The media plays a gigantic role in masculinity. It's in almost every movie we see, commercials, news, music videos, social media, radio, etc. Blue is for boys and pink is for girls. Girls cry, boys don't. "BE A MAN!" The movie played a clip from "Training Day" with Denzel Washington. Denzel is asking his partner if he had sex with a girl, but in a vulgar manner. The partner replied that he's married, and Denzel basically responded with, so what? If you're a man, you cheat. Insinuating that all men cheat because they have a penis.

6. Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film.

A solution to the problems presented in this film would be to raise boys differently. Teach them that crying is okay, speaking to someone about their pain is okay, and showing emotion is okay. It doesn't mean you're weak, but instead means you're not afraid to express yourself. If each person taught their little boys this, then maybe homicide rates would go down.

1. Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.

- Masculinity is something that is taught at a very young age through many things even gender roles. Boys are taught the to be a "man" you have to like/act a certain way that society thinks is acceptable. Boys are taught they have to be tough, storing, and leaders of the family.
2. Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity.
- Men show masculinity when playing sports, having to prove their strength and abilities to the other team. Or when working out at a gym.
3. What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women?
- Because men are taught at such a young age that being a man means you have to hide your emotions, you have to be strong and never show weakness. This can be destructive in a relationship. A man will naturally want to be the controller. He will hide his feelings and won't show how he feels because society has told him that doing so will effect his "masculinity," this can sometimes turn violent, depending on the person.

What the relationship:
a. between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity?
- When a man fails to show how "manly" he is by not following how society has taught to be masculine, a man can be seen as weak, soft, or even feminine. Men are too afraid to be seen as feminine because they will be called names or called "gay" which according to a a "true man" is not something you want to be. So males are now forced to hide their emotions and do many other things to act tough. This shows how masculinity is related to homophobia/sexism.
b. between violence and masculinity?
- Violence and masculinity are related because violence is one of the most common ways in which a man will try to prove his masculinity. to be a man you would always have to be the strongest and the bravest. You couldn't cry or talk about your emotions, especially with your guys friends, so when something goes wrong boys won't usually talk about it and hug it out like girls do, instead they'll take it straight to something physical.
5. What role does the media take in socializing masculinity?
- The media plays a big role in socializing masculinity. Especially in our generation, movies, TV shows, music, and social media all put a pressure on men to be this certain type of guy. How you dress, act, speak all is important and the media tells us that. Starting from a young age kids are seeing that men in the movies always have power and money and are womanizers, making them have this image of what a man is supposed to be.
6. Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film.
We just need to be more accepting. We need to raise our children differently and teach them that showing emotions doesn't make you any less of a man. We need to not be as harsh on our boys, there are different ways that a man can show he is a man, for example being a gentleman. Teaching boys that if they show weakness, they won't be a man is actually only hurting them. We need to teach them that boys and girls are equal.

1. Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.

Well at a young age some boys are verbally abused by those who interact with them on a daily bases, like parents, coaches, and even friends. Sometimes they use phrases to belittle that person. Terms that usually give the idea that the person is not mascaline but more feminine. This leads the person to feel out of place in society.

2. Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity.
When they are aggressive, hide their emotions, drink alcohol, smoke, and showing no respect for woman.

3. What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women?
I learned in the film that when a boys starts school they play with everyone. Eventually that changes, they start to play with boys only and say that girls have cooties. If a boy decides to play with a girl after that is establish they can get kicked off from being a boy. As life goes on they keep that same mental attitude, not that girls have cooties, but the fact that in order to be a masculine they have to do things inorder for them not to be "kicked off from being a man". This is seen in college in the sororities. A guy can rape a woman in front of other guys, act aggressively towards one, take photos inappropriate photos with the woman and than comment on her body in a sexual way. This leads the relationship between men and women to be aggressive, sexual, emotionless, a way to gain approval from other males when acting "masculine" on a woman, and even a feeling that they are powerful when compared to a women.

4. What the relationship:

  a) between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity?
Masculinity encourages sexism and phrohibits homophobia. In the film a man mentioned that when guys do things to female that hurt them they feel higher than a woman. In the film it also mentioned a story about a guy who wasn't homo during his years in school, but acted as a trensgender in a film. His father who saw it felt uneasy because although he wasn't gay, he portrayed himself as one.
b) between violence and masculinity?
Violence is linked to masculinity because it gives an individual a source of power. I remember in the film a guy mentioned that after shooting a guy six times he felt so much power. Although killing others isn't good at all, he felt that killing someone else made him feel higher than him, and undefeatable. At the end of the interview he mentioned that although he did feel powerful at the moment, the cost was high.

5. What role does the media take in socializing masculinity?
It dehumanizes the people who use the media. Videogames for instance, trains a person to get used to hurting others. This at times leads some kids to act on what they saw while playing video games. The same is with music. Rap music in particular uses beats that are catchy but have violent words and music videos that trains guys to become violent, aggressive, to belittle woman, and to be emotionless.

6. Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film.

Well if a person can talk to a male they know in their life that they are a man and not " you need to stop" doing this or "you need to start" doing this to be man. To love them and listen to how they feel. If everyone in society tried to at least help one person that way maybe males would get in less trouble.

Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society.

We can see how masculinity is built within our society through our entertainment. Through many tv shows, magazines, and even movies. Men are expected to sexualize women, and be tough. They are cannot show a sign of weakness as it’s unacceptable for men.

Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity.
We can see in the sports/hobbies men are expected to take part in. They are typically physical sports displaying athleticism. They are expected to get involved with sports like boxing, wrestling, and/or football. All of these are considered to be masculine where as ballet, theater, and so on are considered to be for women. These activities can be violent can come through video games where they are killing another.

What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women?

Men are expected to provide the most money, and to be masculine. From personal experience, I have heard women say: “I will not marry or date a man if his hands are as soft as mine.” They say this because taking care of their self or having an office job are considered to be for women.

What the relationship:

between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity?
All of these come from the expectations of what a man can be. Men are expected to be powerful, strong, etc. Masculinity is the root of homophobia and sexism as it makes them feel uncomfortable or indifferent.

between violence and masculinity?
Men are expected to be strong and power, as stated before. If they aren’t the strongest, it apparently means they are weak within society. Also, they are not expected to share their feelings which leads to an openness of anger.

What role does the media take in socializing masculinity?

Media is exposed to everyone at nearly age. They display the social expectations that are to be held, as the girls commercials (soft and delicate) vs. boys commercials (aggressive and tough). They instill societies expectations from a young age.

Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film.

A solution would be to think through on why we are acting a certain way. Why should we dismiss a boy’s feelings unlike a girls? We would need to find the root of why we feel that way or how we were taught it. When we find the root, then it’s easier to understand and change.

1.Give an example of how masculinity is socially constructed in our society. They don’t cry or show emotion. They are encouraged not to talk about pain. They downplay qualities that are associated with females.

2.Describe a way men “do” or perform masculinity. They play sports, go to the gym, and always performing things with intensity to the extreme. They would not participate in things such as ballet or theater because it might be looked upon as feminine.

3.What is the impact of masculinity on the relationship between men and women? It’s okay to for a man to be a womanizer. The men is the head of the house who provides for the family. They go to work, and usually the person disciplines the children especially boys. They aren’t encouraged to take on the role of a stay at home dad.

4.What the relationship:

a. between sexism, homophobia, and masculinity? Men as said before needs to be strong and show no signs of weakness. If they do, they looked upon by other males as feminie, gay, or a wussy. This is seen a lot especially through adolescence where males would hide who they are. They would play sports, date the head cheerleader because that is what a man should do. If they were to be homosexual, they would get harassed, and out casted.

b. between violence and masculinity? They solve problems through violence and going head to head with one another. It shows who is the alpha male whether it’s school, work, or between siblings. They are not taught to talk it out when dealing with a difficult situation.

5.What role does the media take in socializing masculinity? Everything from sports, commercials, to movies. Men are depicted as strong and muscular who drive expensive cars and get hot girls. NBA, NFL players are receiving million-dollar paychecks because of their athletic ability. Toys for boys are usually action figures, violent video games, and camouflaged. While girls are seen playing with dolls, and everything pink.

6.Describe a solution to one of the problems presented in the film. You have first start off with a proper accepting environment. Parents need to able to tell kids that it’s okay to show emotion and express yourself. We need to teach our kids what is to be a gentlemen in this day and age.
