Anne Frank is a Jewish girl that was born on June 12, 1929 in Frankfurt, Germany. She lived in Germany prior to Adolf Hitler coming to power. Once Hitler came to power, her family moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands. She had 3 other family members. Otto Frank (Father), Edith Frank (Mother), and Margot Frank (Sister). Anne and Margot spent the time playing with their friends outside of their house. Many Jewish children from Germany live outside of their home. So, she makes friends quickly. Otto even had a business. It was called "Opekta". Opekta sells pectin. Which is high in complex carbohydrates. But, due to his business, Otto is rarely home. The Franks hope that the business will do well.

Source: H, Paige "Anne Frank"https://www.emaze.com/@AFWIQRQI/Anne-Frank (4-5-17)

The Holocaust is an event that occurred from January 30, 1933-May 8, 1945 in all of Europe. This event caused the death of 6 million Jewish people and 11 million people in total. The Holocaust was started by Adolf Hitler, Germany's Führer, who believed that Jews were terrible people, and Hitler thought that he was doing "God's work" by mass murdering the Jewish people.
Hitler hunted down the Jews and put them into ghettos, which were designed to "round up" the Jews. They were designed to separate, persecute, and ultimately kill the Jews. Hitler would also put the Jews into Concentration Camps. They were also designed to separate, persecute, and kill the Jews, but they were designed to keep the Jews contained while they suffered hard labor conditions. The Nazis would kill the Jews by starving them, letting them die of disease, and letting the doctors do experiments on the Jews. There were also concentration camps that were designed to slaughter Jews. These were called "Mass Murder Camps". Only six existed, and they were all located in Poland.
The doctors would preform very inhumane experiments. One of which included putting Jewish people into freezing water and recording the time it took for them to perish, including recording their body temperature at death. This experiment known as the "Freezing Experiments" took the life of 280 - 300 Jews.

Source: "Germany" https://www.thinglink.com/scene/647810432504954880
(4-11-17)

Life in the Secret Annex

Margot got a summons to join a work camp. But, Otto and Edith had no intention of allowing her daughter to be taken away. So, they hid in a secret annex. It is a secret building within a building. The annex was hid behind a bookcase. The building was very small. The annex had 4 floors. The ground and second floor is a part of the business. But, the residents of the annex used this when the business was not open. The third floor is the Pfeffer and Frank bedroom. The bathroom was also on this level. The fourth floor was the dining area and the Van Pels's bedroom. The attic was used for storage. Some contributors to the annex are Meip Gies, Victor Kugler, Johannes Kleiman, and Bep Voskuijl. They all helped conceal the residents. The residents got on each others nerves. They were very mean to each other in the beginning. The occupants of the annex read and studied to help pass the time. Anne wrote in a journal to help keep her entertained and to pass the time. Meip Gies would later find the journal after the Franks, Van Pels, and Pfeffers had been sent to the concentration camp. Once Otto Frank had returned from the camps, Meip gave Anne's journal to Otto, and Otto decided to get the journal published. The tenants of the annex had a radio to stay on top of current events. One day, an announcement came on the radio. The announcement stated that the Americans had joined the war in Europe. The tenants of the annex were very hopeful that their time in the annex was very near to ending. They hoped that they were going to get out of the annex safe and sound.

Source: "Inside the Secret Annex" http://www.annefrankguide.net/en-US/bronnenbank.asp?aid=26234 (4-6-17)
