In this scene Temple is at her first ranch and is watching the cows get dipped and notices how loud they are mooing and how they prefer to walk in circles. Here is where Temple first relates to the cows, as a child Temple would spin when she was nervous to calm herself and here she sees that same behavior in the cows when they are nervous. This is where Temple first sees herself and cows as animals of prey and believes that through what she has learned dealing with her autism she can help the cows be treated more humanely and help the ranchers be more efficient. The Italian Journal of Food and Safety reports that when cattle become more stressed in the slaughterhouse their movement through the slaughterhouse is slowed and with small improvements the cows could faster through the process (Disanto, 2014).

Here Temple is trying to convince her professor of her master thesis idea. She explains that if slaughter houses were to work with cow's natural tendencies the slaughter process would not only be more humane for the cows but also more efficient for the business by not losing as many cows in the process, having less ranch hands, and by speeding up the process by creating a steady flow. In an article from the Oxford Journal of Animal Science it is stated that when cows go through the slaughter process in a way that is more natural to them even though it might seem slower to the workers it is actually quicker because the cows are moving at a more constant pace instead of the traditional stop and go (Oijen, 1993).

Temple is angry in this scene because she has created this new system to dip cows that has been deemed "brilliant", but the ranch hands decided that the system takes too long and make their own changes to it, killing three cows in the process. This shows that Temple has no delusions about the fate of the cattle but still believes that they have a right to be calm and relaxed in the time leading up to the slaughter. It has been found that stress in livestock can produce negative effects on their bodies and in turn can affect consumers. For example, it has been found that cows that come from slaughterhouses that have unfavorable conditions produce lower quality meat (Yousef, 1985).

In this scene Temple compares slaughterhouse killings with killings in the wild. She goes on to say that slaughterhouses and the process of getting the cattle there should be more humane and relaxed than a lion killing in the wild and states that as it is right now there might as well be no difference. In an article from Colorado State University Department of Animal Sciences it is stated that it is our duty as producers and consumers of meat to treat animals humanly and with respect and to only buy from companies that raise their animals this way, because if we do not then we are only continuing the cycle (Grandin, 2010).

Temple never had any intention to free the cattle completely or to stop slaughterhouses from killing cows. Her goal was to make the process to the slaughterhouse more bearable and relaxed for the cows, she never wanted to see any of them suffer in the process. She also believed that by designing new technologies for the cow's comfort she could also make the process more efficient for the business side. Temple Grandin states in The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association that when cattle are treated better and allowed to move through the slaughter using their natural instincts the process moves faster as a whole at a constant pace (Grandin, 2005.)
