The zoo has a Symbolic Adoption program - different levels of monetary donation - we choose a basic one since we don’t need the extra perks. The zoo gives us a plush of that animal with a picture of the actual animal and a zoo description. (One year we had Carmen, the red wolf. So we got a stuffed animal toy that looked like a wolf. Then we posted the pic of Carmen on a bulletin board at school. With the zoo info and made announcements throughout the year to remind students that our school had sponsored Carmen for the year and to look for Carmen when they visit the zoo with their families. We plan a day for our ML students to go to the zoo. We usually book a 30-minute(ish) educational program with the zoo, then the kids have about an hour to hang out. We take sack lunches and go to the park across the street then head back to school - THEY. LOVE. IT.

Each grade level is a team. We hold elementary field day activities, academic quiz bowl, dodge ball tournament, and art competition. The class officers are in charge of putting teams together to compete. They must include everyone in their class. We want to be able to include all students to be able to highlight each students talent. Each activity is work points. The class with the most points at the end of the day is the Wolf Olympics Champion. We do an opening ceremony where the classes make their own flags and walk in to a school appropriate song. This fits in to Pride and Patriotism (pride in your class), Energy and Environment (most activities are done outside so we save electricity), and DASH (mental health, exercise).

Sometime in the fall (before gift-giving season) we host a drive for families to go through and clean out their stash of gently used stuffed animals, coats, and blankets and we donate them to our PD/FD and/or to our helping hands facility. (We only do this every few years so they don’t have to find a place to store too many at a time)

We had a game theme. Each day was decorated to match the game. Students took pictures and had a lot of fun with it. I used construction paper and the laminator to make the candyland game pieces. I used the game pieces from a clue set and gave them to teachers. I made copies of the clue worksheets for the student body who could only ask questions during passing periods.

We ask the social workers at the three feeder elementary schools to nominate students, we send the social workers permission forms and needs/wants forms. We try to get at least 10-12 students from each of these campuses. The classes on our campus "adopt" a child and they are matched with one of these kiddos and they throw them a Christmas Party - buy gifts, buy foods, etc. The HS students can buy gifts, bring money, bring food, etc. We ask each group spend around $100 on their child - this is ALWAYS ignored and they spend way more than that. Then on the Friday before finals, one of our staff members dresses up like Santa and the kids show up on busses and meet him in the library where he reads to the kids. Once we hit 3rd period we ask each class to send a representative down to collect their kiddo and take them to have their parties. This is the absolute most amazing day for EVERYONE on campus. The HS kids are in awe of the joy they are bringing - we've actually done this so long that we have many HS students who were once the recipients of these parties.

Since we live on a border town, every year our biggest and longest Pep Rally is our Mexican Independence Day Pep Rally. It is always held on the closest Friday to September 16. During this pep rally, we have three games that students play for Battle of the Classes; a tamale eating contest (with students), a Mexican hat dance contest (with teachers), and a grito contest (with students). Everyone dresses up in "Fiesta" attire and soccer team/Mexico jerseys. Our school Mariachi comes out and performs 2-4 songs for us and our school Conjunto comes out and we have all our students come down and perform a full gym guapango dance. It is our most popular pep rally all year.
