The campaign, which pitted Tilden against Republican nominee Rutherford B. Hayes, was a bitter one, and the election results promised to be close. On election night, Tilden won the popular vote and secured 184 uncontested electoral votes</p><p>Tilden's money when he passed away was combined with the city's Astor and Lenox libraries to form the renowned New York Public Library in 1895.</p>]]></description>
