Writing the proposal took me more time than the expected because I started doing it three days ago, but since then I my perspective about the project changed.
At first wanted to work with recyclable materials to create sustainable design, but then I started to look for references of design that uses human models to create the composition, combining with other materials. I was interested about ir and started researching about the use of performance and how I could use that are create graphic design. So I rewrote the proposal about three times until I got to the result I wanted. I think I used my time well because I spend until the last hour working on it, and didn't have to rush.

So I did some research on that items. I realised that is good to make analytical research on the sketchbook other than just on padlet, because I have more freedom to write, draw and analyse the images.

At first I thought of going to suppliers, but then I realised that even people around me are producing waste constantly, and I can use this project to set an exemple to people to follow, and even in a small scale try to reduce the waste they produce. That's Why I choose to collect the materials my family and friends are producing.

By adding one subject in the center of the page and writing every idea that comes in mu head about this subject I can have many ideas quickly. Once I write down one idea another comes to mind that is slightly related to the last one, after doing it a few times I come up with an idea that has nothing to do with the first one, in the and I have many different visions of the sabe subject. I did that for “using the body” and “ using waste”, afterwords I tried combining the ideas for each one of them and selected the ones I want to experiment with this week. This technique is great cause if I keep thinking only about that one question from the project proposal I will always have the same ideas, if I break the question down to two or three subjects it makes it easier to have many ideas without worrying about this being adequate to that question, afterwords I can combine every idea I had to answer the question.

I can come back to this brain storm later on the project with fresh eyes cause I can have nem ideas with what is written.

The lecture was great, specially because he inspired me to keep trying to achieve my goals even if it feels hopeless. He is French and spent one and a half years sending every day at least one email or portfolio to California animation studios, and finally he got a job at DreamWorks.
His work can be related to my project in a way that his art process has lots to do with the body, he likes to use the body movements, walking around the studio and using gravity to make drawings. This made me think that I don't have necessaraly to take pictures of models for my project, but I could also just experience with the body in the process of making, maybe as a tool, or as shape reference or molde. He also uses pictures of real people when developing characters. Using makeup and photoshop he starts building his characters, this is something that I could explore also. He said that an artist should be very aware of their likes and dislikes because there is no point on making something I don't agree with, and that's an important point on my project, since I have enough time to come up with something I like, and this will be exposed with my name in the final exhibition, it has to have my signature.

I started folding and cutting to get different shaves and volumes and I got to this spiral like shape, and by connecting many of these one to another I could come up with a really long spiral maybe hanging from the ceiling. I could also paint the paper another color to hide all the stuff that is written.

Charles Watson talked about originality, and people that are creative are not trying to be creative. This is lecture was very important to creative practice because he gave us really important tips on the importance of making mistakes, that is something that I'm usually afraid of doing, so after the talk I have some changes that I want to do on the way I work. Creativity is natural if you find the relationship between what you love doing and and what you are doing. This means that if I try to have original ideas I'll probably fail, but if I try to have a lot of ideas and experiment a lot because I feel interested about it and love recovering new things, suddenly been creative and having original ideas will become natural.

I spent most of my day calling to places that have cutting service for wood, rubber and fabric, asking for left overs. Most of the places I called have no interest on giving me the material and would radder sell it, but some of them was happy to help me giving me the materials that would normally go to waste. I found a supplier that makes lazer cut and have full bags of waste materials every day, a fabric cutter that throws away tones of fabric scraps every day, a place that have moldes for flip-flops, I talked to the lady that sells and she already kept some of the leftover materials for me, and another place that cuts fabric and plastic for making tote bags, and also is happy to help my project.
All of these places produces a lot of waste every day, and all of this goes to trash. People don't see the amount of waste they produce, cause it's not just about food packaging, the making clothes produces lots of fabric scraps, shoes produces rubber and plastic waste. Every time we buy new things we are producing lots of trash indirectly, cause that's what it takes to produce new things, so the ideal would be consuming less, and just when necessary. I'm gonna try to explore this subject on my experimentations for the next few days, it might lead somewhere.

There is not much to reflect about today, I went to Brás pick up the stuff I planned yesterday. I would say that it's really time consuming, luckily I planned the entire day only to do this. Once I have all the material I had to store that in the right places so it was a good thing preparing all the storage space yesterday also, and both things (getting the left overs and organising) together took the whole day. Thats only because I went only to three stores and decided not to go to the fourth one cause I already had enough material. If I decide to get more material in the future I can use this numbers as a reference of time.

Now I have sorts of fabric scraps, plastics, cardboards, paper, lazer cut left overs... I have to organize my self to do experiments with all that.

But it takes too long to fold this in a size that would look ok as hair simulation. each one of these took me about 20. minutes to prepare and fold, so I'm still not sure if it's worth it to spent so much time in this not knowing if it's gonna work. I should probably make a doll sized version of it just so I can see if it looks good and maybe decide to do a real size version of the wig or not.

I did 10 more drawings having ideias of possible images to make using all the materials I have. I believe it’s important to have many ideas because some might go wrong or maybe I think does not belong to the exhibition, so I have 20 to choose from and I can be very selective not worrying abou not having enough work. Everything I drawn was a prediction of what I think the objects behavior like, without having a preview experimentation, so it might work or it could not work and I’ll have to come up with another solution l. That’s why I planned to star the experimentations tomorrow. They have sewing machine here at ebac so all I gotta do is bring the material that I’m planning to experiment with. For now I’m planning on joining plastic bags of all kinds and bringing them to something similar to a fabric like material that can be easily manipulated and have a clean finish. Afterwords I plan on mixing plastic with lights and playing with the transparency.

I was unsure if it was gonna work but I’m glad it did. First I bought gold paint from a brand and the color was wrong, the packaging said it was gold but for real it was brown, it’s really important to check if the colors work as soon as possible once I buy a net material, because things like this can happen every time, so I could switch so another brand that is even cheaper then the other one, and have a stunning metal effect.

My idea is to make a gold wig that looks like black power hair using paper. Just like this drawing. I started making paper balls and it takes more time than it looks like, specially when I’m trying to keep them as round as possible. In half an hour I made 35 paper balls and I still have so much more to go. A strategy I thought of is making balls not so perfectly round and with more volume to put underneath the others, so it will probably take less time and less paper to finish.

It would have a huge impact to te viewer to see a big sculpture made with trash. The tree is simple of life and its contradictory because the producing of waste is one of the main reason for animals and people dying. It's a symbol of the destruction of nature that is caused by the human waste production.

For that reason I tried to simulate sequin fabrics but using the cardboard with glue, instead of gluing the inspire circle I used just a drop of glue on the edge of the circle this way the paper underneath can still move like a fabric.

Today I saw a video end read some articles about fast fashion (in research padlet) and the Fashion Industrie is the second most polluting industry in the world, I did a list of some of the things that causes that:
- Fabric scraps
- Rest of bad formed fibers
- Waxes
- Threads
- Wool (only part is used)
- Old clothes
- Dye containers
- Packaging
- Paper and plastic
- Bags
- Water from dyeing process (it's a lot of water)
- Fuel from transportation and machines
- Tags
- Pollutant gases from synthetic fiber production
- Everything we might through in the trash

It's a subject that I wold like to talk about in my project because it's about sustainability and I've been on the other side of this, when I thought fast fashion was awesome and even went to fashion school to "help polluting the planet". After six months I quit and decided to stop buying things that I don't need, and that's where my interest about sustainability grew. I think it would be a good area to focus on for this project considering my past with fashion.

Today after doing some experimentations, I started thinking that the idea I had before of doing a vídeo was too immature and was not create as much impact on people as I wish. Talking about fashion industry is over done, and many people have already seen fashion made from trash, it didn’t seem to have anything truly original.
So I came back to the first pages on my project book where I’ve done tons of research about trash ending up in the ocean, until I got to this new idea.
After a few minutes I realised that one of the best ways of making people actually think about something they are doing wrong is by creating an oppressive situation where they feel suffocated.
I started doing some drawings and got to this circular shape where everything surrounds the viewer and as narrow it is the bigger the feeling of being embraced by something. It could maybe be a tunnel that starts wide and gets narrow as it goes, all made with trash. The trash we produce is usually on the ground in a "lower" position, what would be the feeling of putting it on top, almost swallowing us.
I've been focusing a lot about doing wearables, but it also made me think of other ways of using the body not only as a surface to put the art, but maybe letting the viewer be part of the work by making an interactive installation.

At first looking at it it seemed great, but onde I tried to move it the paint started breaking apart out of the plastic. The material of the bag does not have enough adherence to fix the paint without breaking. I'll have to find another way of painting it or using the plastic in its original color which seems to be the wiser choice.

Painting it blue or a light purple and using this on the decoration of the environment I create in my installation would give a great felling of sea and would look beautiful as well keeping my work far from looking like trash.
I'm travelling during the holidays what means that I don't have any materials to experiment with or do anything other then researching and having ideas.

I decide to create a sort of brand with name and logo for my project to give it more value to the work and also to do more literal graphic design. I intent to create an instagram page and maybe a facebook page to share all my researches about the environment and alternatives to live more ecologically, also to show and register my project and maybe inspire other people. After thinking of many names that already exist I finally got to this: Thanks Plants. Plants meaning nature, in a sense that we should be thanking everything nature give to us and taking care of it but we are destroying it instead.
I did lot of sketches of logos trying to use the initials T and P (for thanks plants) until I got to this design that transform into a leaf. I needed to make shapes in a way I could move it around, but I didn't want to do it digitally because the drawing movements are more limited, so I decided to draw the base of what I wanted on a piece of paper and put the outlines this way I could move it around the paper to choose the exact position of the lines. To change the lines and make it longer I added black tape on the edge. After the first try I decided that it would look better with a longer line to close the bowl of the "P". Now I have to make a digital vector for it and maybe choose a color to use.

I did the digital version of the logo I designed yesterday by drawing circles and cutting to the size I needed. Once it was finished It looked like the positioning was wrong even though it was perfectly alined. Thats because the logo does not fit perfectly a circle and has a diagonal direction. To make it look like it's right I used the trick of putting the letters lower and more to the left in relation to the circle, and it worked, specially looking at the small logo on instagram.
This is the final result:

In it I wrote this: “Most of the experiments they do in Dream Works are not resieles. I have to do experiment a lot and do a lot of work to have one idea that really pleases me”
I was worried that I spent too much time thinking of ideas that I don’t want to make any more, and I thought it was a problem, but now I realize that all the time I spent doing research experimenting with those ideas made dat to where I’m now, and they are not lost, they just made me think in a different way then I did in the beguiling of the project. Now I can use all the this I tried and experimented with but instead of making clothes as costumes and photography I can use this for creating a beautiful and intense installation.

But after seeing the installations today I realised the importance of people being able to appreciate as much time as they want. I saw this red tree and I wanted to spend as much time as I wanted just looking at all the details of the work. If I define a way to walk people wouldn't be able to stop and really look at the details of the installation and it might devalue my work. That's why I'm now considering doing just a room but not a tunnel, in a way people can move around freely without having to follow a path.

We had a quick crit about the exhibition proposal. The girls that were with me gave me the idea of unread of doing two different spaces to make only one space that in the blue light looks really beautiful, but at some time when the white light hits the space the viewer realize that it’s all garbage. I thought about that and it's a pretty great idea that would act as a "wow"factor in my work. I thought of two possibilities for it:
Using a mechanism that makes the light change from blue to white every minute or two.
Adding a white spotlight that keeps spinning and showing a different mart of the room (when the light hits the walls people can see that its garbage)

It's Saturday (27.04) and I had another idea of a possibility for this surprise and also to include the viewer in my work. In the beginning of the project I proposed that I was going to use the body, so the audience interacting with my work is an important factor. For that reason I thought of giving lanterns to people on the door and the them light up the things and discovering that it's actually trash. This would be also a nice and easy way to set a limit of people that can get in each time.

I did different drawings for each section of the proposal (2d, 3d and 4d, and also drawing and reference image). I'm going to cover all the room with fabric and my tutor advised me having wooden boards fixed on the walls and ceiling in a way I can then fix the fabric with stapler and it's easier and faster. The tutor also advised us to make it as detailed and specific as possible. So I tried to do the drawings as detailed as possible and I also set a color coding where the pink represents the size, the blue represents distance, the brown is for wood and the greys and blacks are the structure of the room itself. I didn't specified the scale of the drawing because I didn't know the size the image would have once placed on the pdf file, so I just added the real mesurements of things.

For me it was hard to represent what I was intending to make the room link like science everything are just drawings and reference test pieces, and it would be impossible to make a collage with perspective of the installation, so I just did a drawing with an upper view of the room to show where I'm planning to put each of the objects. I also decided to use the scale module I started last week just to represent the covering of the walls and floor. If I decided to do a really detailed scale module with every object I as planing to add I would loose too much useful time of work, and the drawings were already doing a great job on exemplifying the installation.

I was felling that the drawing I did yesterday was not enough to represent what the space would look like in the exhibition, so I did a simple digital drawing in perspective of the objects placed in the room. After writing all the details of the work in the document, I realised that I didn't add any information about sound. I'm not intending to use it because I would be too much trouble considering everything I'm doing already demands to much time and effort. But I figured It would be best to have it and deciding not to use it than the other way around, so I added on simple line saying I might also need speakers. There are some other things I am considering doing but the ideas are still quite clouded, so these are things I'm experimenting on the next few weeks and deciding afterward.
I had the idea of giving to people reusable bags so they consider stop using plastic bags, and I could screen print a nice design or the projet's brand logo in it. But I'm concerned I won't have enough time to do it, and also I don't thing my budget will allow me to purchase these bags. I also did some research on prices to buy them ready with my pattern, but the good options are too expensive.
Another thing that I'm considering using on my exhibition but I didn't included on my proposal is giving people lanterns in the entrance of the room. It will be lighten by a blue light and the idea is to make the garbage look good under blue light and when you hit it with the white light of the lantern it just looks like garbage. I didn't actually tried it yet, that's why it's not in the proposal.

01.04 Fabric Scraps Covering

The initial idea was to sew all the fabric scraps together and make a covering for the room. But I haven't consider the time it takes to sew it. I started doing it today and I spent 2 hours sew, in the end I got just a small piece of 0,5 sq m fabric. The room hast two giant walls, two regular sized walls and the whole ceiling. It would be something around 150 sq m to cover. Do all that by joining fabric scraps in the sewing machine would be just insane, and would take about a hundred hours on the sewing machine. I had to come up with another plan. I spent quite a time thinking if other possibilities and I thought if two alternatives: using cardboard as a base and gluing the fabric on top it, or using a paper stapler to joining the scraps instead of sewing. I tested two times of glue: white glue didn't work, the fabric would stick to the cardboard, and 'cola universal' with takes quite a time to dry and took as much time as the sewing process. The least worse option seemed to be using the stapler but even like this it would be hard to make it to cover all the room. In the end I decided to do this the the walls that would me more apparent, in the beginning of the experience, and in the wall that would have a lot of things on front it wound make sense have all this work to be hidden in the end, so I'm going to paint an old bed sheet that Was going to garbage bin, and use this as a backdrop fot this wall. The other parts that are not as important as these two I'm just covering them with all sorts of plastic garbage I have collected such as bottles and styrofoam.

I'm in a stage of the project where there is not need of too much thinking but a lot of making. I listed all the things I have to have ready before the day of the installing of the exhibition. The things that will take more time is the making of the walls and sea urchins. I spent the whole day doing spikes and building Sea Urchins today. It takes more or less 1 hour and 15 minutes top build each one, which means that in one day I can make about 4 of them. In the beginning of the day we had a moment to list all the materials I need to buy and I used that also to list what I have to prepare, so I had time to make 2 sea urchins today.

05.05 Walls Covering

In two hours of work today I could make only one meter by 30 centimetres of covering with the fabric scraps. My gramma tried to help me and she could do the same amount in half an hour because she has more experience with sewing than me. So I had to think of another way of covering the walls because none of them seemed to work until now. I thought of sewing the fabrics with sewing machine, hand sewing it onto another base, stapling, gluing it with several types of glue and its been so had to find one that would work and look good, but wouldn't take too long to build. So I realised that it wouldn't work and I wouldn't have time to do all the walls. One option would be to do it just for part of the room and cover the rest another way, but it would devalue the work. So looking at all the materials I have the majority are food packagings and general house waste, the amount of fabric I have in relation to the rest is not so big, so I tried joining all the things: Plastics, boxes, fabric and bottles. It worked really well, because the amount of stitching I had to do was really smaller, to fix the bottles I used thread that is really easy to work, the fabrics looked like sea weed in the composition and the overall look was good. I'll carry on this for the next week and hopefully won't take more then 7 days to finish it.

The stapling method also didn’t work. Doing it in a smaller scale worked and looked good, but as the fabric started to grow it became difficult to do it and the result was not as pretty as it should be. I had again to think of another solution and I found a material that is used to make bathroom carpets, and it’s lake a small braided net fabric. I can use this as a base and pass the points of the fabric scraps through the loops of the net this way I won’t have to see or use any sticking method other then just braiding. It seems to be a good alternative and to be faster then seeing was planed.

I continue the covering. I started yesterday using the same method of joining all the materials I have collected including paper plastic bottles bags cardboxes abd fabric scraps and doing small stitches, and it worked perfectly. It was way faster then the other way and also easier. I could finish the one I started yesterday and start a new one. I did the maths and I will have to have 10 hights is this fabric to cover all the walls in the room. So I’ll need proximally 10 days of work dedicated to that. Tomorrow I'm making an action plan to guide me through all the things I have to get done by the day of installing the work.

To make things faster I'm looking for materials that are bigger and cover more space. Also I'm using the stapler to fix some of the trash when possible, and making small stitches when needed. These materials look just like someone trow their trash on to the surface, but under the blue lights it looks stunning. I did a test with an improvised lantern cover with blue plastic, but this week on Wednesday or Thursday I'm getting a real blue led light to test.

I received the location for my installation in the exhibition and I got the exact space I was aiming for. It will be great because there are already the structures on the ceiling to install all the lightings and also to hang the jelly fishes and fishing net, it has an air conditioner, enough power plugs to everything I need to connect, and also it's gonna be easy to make the room dark and block any lights from outside because it's already closed. The only difficult part will be dealing with the column in the middle of the room, but I can take advantage of that and make it into a sort of pathway divider, so the audience don't just look and the work, but also feel encourage to walk around to the other side of the room.
I believe my proposal was really effective, cause it got me the space I wanted.
I did a brief action plan just to work as a guide line of everything I have to get done by 28th of May. It will probably change though, depending on what days I have the car available to go buying materials, and doing things faster or slower that I anticipated.

I had to reserve a time to make the prints for the box set, and I thought since I have to do this anyway I should at leat make something that is related to my project. For that reason I made a screen with the drawing of a sea turtle. I started the day by preparing my screen to print and I also created a new color by mixing the paints there already were in the print room. But I started having a problem in the printing process: the paint started to stain the paper in the wrong place because of a small whole in my screen. It's time for me to buy a new screen.
I was meaning to leave the turtle as it is as minimalist as possible, but Marcelo and Monique thought it was too simple and I should make at leats a background. So I spent the rest of the day doing the rubi film with this net pattern with the intention to show how sad it is to have this amazing creature captured by accident in fishing nets that most of the times are just garbage from fishing mens. The next day I printed the second color and had the sabe problem of the other screen with the whole on it. this time thought it was faster because the whole were outside the area of the paper so I just had to stick one tape on it.
Since I already have the screen ready I thought it would be a nice idea to make ecobags with a print of the turtle, to sell at the exhibition and encourage people to use reusable bags instead of plastic bags.

The only problem is that The bags didn't fit in the screen printing table., they would have to be bigger, but I couldn't switch, so my tutor said she was borrowing me the pieces of wood she uses to print in fabric without using the tables, and using a system that is similar to printing in paper. One of them is make of bottle caps: I sorted all the caps of the bottles I was using and glued them to a plastic mould that was actually a cake packaging that someone though away. The result was very similar to this coral: Except for the color which won't really matter since the light will be blue and the only difference people will be able to tell is the tones and not the hue. Its nice cause the caps I sorted have different sizes cause they belongs to different types of bottles, and as the images show this coral also have circular parts with different sizes.

In the printing for the box set I did a Turtle draped on a fishing net, but I figured it would be such a negative message to put on a bag, and I decided to print just the turtle without the fishing net, to be very minimalist and not bring any negative connotation with it. This way it's also easier to print since it's only one color.
The wood piece my tutor borrowed me didn't work cause its too small for the bag and the print, so Marcelo (the technician) cut two pieces of wood in the size of the bags and putted the glue that is usually used on the printing table. Even thought it's more work than just buying a bigger bag, it's nice to know that if I want to work with materials in different sizes it's still possible.
I printed 30 bags and after finishing it all I had to do was to blow dry them. The process was really quick cause I had the help of the technician, If I were to make everything bu my self it would take at least twice the time.

My interpretation of this coral is more similar to the one on the right of the picture, cause I used caps that are shorter and the also are placed right next to each other. I found that the best gluing option when it comes to plastic is using the hot glue. The plastic melts a little with the heat and when it dries it gets hard and fix well to itself or to other plastics.

In the first day I had my uncle helping me and also my assistant from PRE foundation. It was good having both of them to hold the wall covering and positioning it in the right place while I look from afar to make sure it looked right. My uncle helped me screwing the walls but I found out it was easier to use the wall stapler to fix the coverings onto the wall. It only worked because the walls are made of drywall.
I didn’t want the room to have sharp corners, so to make sure the coverings would make a round shape in the corners I added a piece of wire on the top part of the wall covering, and it held it in place. In the end the room had no sharp edges.

My plan is to start with the walls cause I'll have help for putting the screws into the wall and fix the coverings in place, and then moving on to all the electric part (including lights, jellyfishes and extensions to the air humidifier). I don't know how to work with electricity so I'll have my uncle helping me with this part.

I planned on making 12 heights of covering to make sure I would have enough for all walls, but when we finished installing it there were only 10 and a big part of the wall that was not covered. So I decided to cover the rest of the wall in fishing nets but the wall were imperfect and I hadn’t painted it because I was expecting to cover it completely, but with the fishing net I could cover 100% per cent. I used them a piece of black fabric there were in ebac that was free to use and put the net on top of it, and it made it look better. I think using fabric to cover thewalls instead of paint is a good idea because it’s not as messy and it’s also faster. In the end of the day when I got home I found two other coverings that I forgot to bring to ebac which means that I could covers all walls with That if I wanted to.

I could leave it as it is but the walls have texture, the ceiling also have texture and the floor as it is doesn't feel right. I had lots of fabric scraps left so I tried throwing some on the floor to simulate seaweed. It didn't really look like seaweed, but I went well with the walls, and the color is a really dark blue so ir drove attention to the rest of the things in the room too. Tomorrow when I finish every other thing that is left to do I'm cleaning the floor and throwing all the fabric scraps in there.

Everything is looking pretty good already all the things that are left to do tomorrow are adding the corals, putting the air humidifier in place and taking all the white light out of the room to the storage space. I brought more trash to completely fill in the white spaces on the wall and after finishing this I just had to organize all the materials to got everything out of the room and cleaning the floor to place the fabric scraps. The floor is full of this fabric so the chances appearing the real floor are small. But if it happens it shouldn't be a problem because it just looks like an under the sea rock underneath all the sand and seaweed. After everything were in place I added the sea urchins. I was thinking of putting this trapped in the fishing nets, but they are way too big, and they stole attention from the little fishes. I was worried that they would disappear in the middle of everything was going on in the room, but they are so big, and also the white color of the paper reflects a lot of light, and it makes them pop out. So I found the best option were to put them in the corners of the room: I added some on the floor near the fishing net, and some on the ceiling near the trash from the walls.
