" I was three years old, and we were living in a trailer park... I was wearing the dress to cook hotdogs. I felt a blaze of heat on my right side. I turned to see where it was coming from and realized my dress was on fire." This excerpt from the book shows the chaos because a little 3 year old girl is cooking on the stove and gets hurt pretty badly and the parents take no responsibility or blame.

"Have I ever let you down? Dad asked. I'd heard that question at least two hundred times, and I'd always answered the way I knew he wanted me to, because I thought it was my faith in Dad that had kept him going all those years. I was about to tell him the truth for the first time, about to let him know that he'd let us all down plenty."
This quote shows how countless times Rex said to his kids "Have I ever let you down?" which he always did.

"I still went into the office in the city once a week, but this was where John and I lived and worked, our home-- the first home I'd ever owned."
This shows that Jeannette has self sufficiency because she has a job and has her own house and is independent. This picture shows that she is now free.

"Lori, when I called her, approved of my plan. I could live with her, she said, if I got a job and chipped in on the rent."
The kids had to grow up real fast and basically do everything for themselves. Their are many examples of this in the book but I wanted to show this example. Lori and Jeannette are coming of age because they are moving out going to school and working at a young age, around 16 or 17.

"We don't need anything....We're fine."
Jeannette has come to the conclusion that her parents dont want help and they will never need help. She also realises that her Mom may never say the right things or act the way a mother is supposed to and show love and care for her kids. This picture shows that Jeannette has accepted the way her mother wants to live her life and she moves on but still cares about her mother even though her mother may not care for her.

Chaos and Order

"Dad said one of the Dealers had figured out that he had a system and had put the word out on him. He told us it was time to do the skedaddle."
This shows chaos because Rex is constantly thinking that someone is after them and as soon as they settle down and have some sort of order something happens to where they need to do the "skedaddle". Like when he thinks the FBI is after them or the cops or gangsters. I think this picture is a good example of how their life is. Always a wreck.
