         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Square Deal</strong>:<br>This was Roosevelt's package of progressive programs<br><strong>Trust Busting</strong>: <br>Roosevelt broke up monopolies that he thought harmed people.<br><strong>1902 Coal Miner's Strike</strong>: Roosevelt decided to take manners into his own hands when there began to be a shortage in coal due to the strike. He had strikers sit down and negotiate.<br><strong>Meat Inspection Act/ Pure Food and Drug Ac</strong>t: <br>After reading <em>The Jungle</em>, by Upton Sinclair, Roosevelt pushed for the meat Inspection and Pure Food and Drug Act to regulate what consumers were buying.<br><strong>Conservation of Natural Resources and Land</strong>:<br>Roosevelt believed in conservation of land, meaning that some land would be preserved(Ex: Yosemite National Park) while other parts of land would be used for the common good<br><strong>Civil Rights(Washington vs. DuBois, NAACP)</strong>: <br>Roosevelt didn't do much. However, he did invite Booker T.          <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Payne-Aldrich Tariff:<br></strong>A tariff on goods entering the U.S.<br><strong>Firing of Gifford Pinchot:</strong><br>The firing of Gifford Pinchot by Taft contributed to Taft's probelms in office and the division in the republican party during this time period.<br><strong>Support for Joe Cannon:</strong><br>Taft's support for Joe Cannon, a political boss who gave himself power to control what bill Congress would take up(the house would often vote for progressive bills to be passed), also contributed to the division in the republican party.<br><strong>Republican Party Split:<br></strong>The Republican Party split into two groups, the progressives(wanted change) and the conservatives(didn't want change)<br><strong>Loss in the Election of 1912 against Wilson and Roosevelt:</strong><br>Taft ran in the election for a second term as part of the Republican party, however, he ultimately lost to Wilson<figure class="attachment attachment--preview"><img src="http://www.presidentprofiles.com/images/prh_01_img0056.jpg" width="226" height="267"><figcaption class="attachment__caption"></figcaption></figure></div>]]></description>
