Indians migrated into British colonies after 1834 in order to meet the shortage of agricultural labor resulting from the abolition of slavery. This shortage threatened to destroy the sugar industry and involve Great Britain in the humiliation of buying sugar from slave labor areas. Most laborers went willingly, but they were not fully aware of the conditions they would face. By 1870, the labor system for Indians was well established in the Caribbean, South Africa, Mauritius, British Guiana, and Trinidad.

https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/emigration-immigration-and-diaspora-relations-india

The British East India Tea company employed many British people in India. Since the costs of living in India were much lower than living in the UK, British workers could afford to hire many Indians to help with housework, called Ayahs. When they returned home, many families brought their best servants with them to help on the voyage home. Once they arrived in the UK, the Ayah’s jobs were done and they were let go. Since they could not afford the trip back to India, many stayed in Britain and found permanent jobs.

https://www.ourmigrationstory.org.uk/oms/a-home-for-the-ayahs-
