PDA is a profile on the autism spectrum characterized by an extreme avoidance of everyday demands and expectations, often driven by anxiety. Individuals with PDA may appear controlling or oppositional, but their behavior is rooted in a need to manage overwhelming feelings of threat or loss of autonomy.

Supportive approaches for someone with PDA include low-demand environments, collaborative and flexible communication, play-based and sensory-informed therapies, and a strong focus on relationship-building rather than behavioral compliance. Traditional reward-based or behaviorist approaches, such as ABA, are often ineffective and can increase anxiety or resistance.
