In a recent development in this saga, it has come out that JP Morgan will sue him for $162 million over a dispute relating to the tweets.

In this case, GameStop was a struggling business which investors did not expect to do well so they bet on its failure in a move called 'shorting'. However, if specific Reddit forum called wallstreetbets decided to coordinate a large buying of stock in GameStop substantially increasing the value of the stocks and leaving many major funds in a severe loss. This never-before-seen example shows how social media platforms can allow individuals to communicate and coordinate their efforts to disrupt the established financial powers.

  • Blogs and micro-blogging: means of non-filtered communication with an audience about any topic, used in political campaigns to spread awareness of issues or events. The hashtag function is often used to generate widespread attention and interest in a topic 
  • Ability to connect with large community: easy and rapid information sharing. Social media allows for fast and widespread rally of support 
  • Availability of social media means that anyone can ‘make their case’, give their opinion and form their own political movement or campaign
    • Beneficial to those who wouldn’t normally have access to political commentary
