As a Catalan surname, it comes from the Latin, battalia, from battuere, which means "to win". It is rare and is distributed throughout Spain, it is appropriate according to Moll in his work "els llinatges cataláns" of the noun-battle- (from Latin battalia) applied in the middle ages as a nickname to courageous people for weapons.
