1803- The Louisiana Purchase

The U.S. purchased 828,000 sq miles from the French in 1803, this land was west of the Mississippi River and was previously known as the Louisianna Territory. This land stretched from the Mississippi River, to the rocky mountains, and from the Canadian boarder to the Gulf of Mexico.

1804- Beginning of Lewis and Clark Expedition

This expedition was led by the U.S. military. The Captains of this expedition were Lewis and Clark. In what is now considered North Dakota, they found a tribe where there was a woman named Sacajawea and she joined the expedition as an interpreter and also helped find essential supplies and keep calm relations with other advice.

1828- Increased voting rights

The voting requirement of a citizen needing to own property was dropped. Votes increased from 350,000 in 1824 to 1,155,000 in 1828. Still, no women, slaves, or American Indians were allowed to vote.

1828- Rise of the Democratic party

The "Democratic Party" was created in 1828, and claimed to be the voice of farmers and workers, rather than the small population of wealthy people.

1830- Indian Removal Act and Trail Of Tears

Andrew Jackson signed into law the Indian Removal Act, which allowed him as president to give land west of the Mississippi up in exchange for Indian territory. It was said at one time that these Native Americans gave up their land but really they were forced off of it. This journey was called the Trail of Tears because it was a sad and horrible thing for the natives.

1840- Manifest Destiny

This was a phrase created around the 1840s. It was believed that it was God's intent that white Americans were to expand their territory and spread democracy across the North American continent.

1793-1800s Invention of cotton gin

After the cotton gin was invented the amount of cotton produced was doubled each decade. The cotton gin was used to separate cotton seeds from cotton.

1814- Rise of mass production and factory system

In Lowell Massachusettes the first factory opening led to the working of "Mill girls", these girls and women worked long hours in poor conditions for small wages. Some women were able to save up enough money to become economically independent.

1817- Completion of the Erie Canal

The canal began being built in 1817 and finished on October 26th, 1825. The Canal traveled 326 miles. It stretched from Albany to Buffalo. At the time it was the longest artificial waterway and labeled New York as the Empire State. It led in population and industry.

Early 1800s- Rise of abolitionist movement

After Frederick Douglass escaped from slavery he became a national leader for the abolitionist movement. His popularity came from the speeches he gave and his writing. He believed that all men were created equal in the eyes of God.

1848- Seneca Falls Convention

It was originally known as the Woman Rights Convention. This convention fought for religious, social, and civil rights (such as voting) for women. At that convention, the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted and called for womans equality.
