Lines:
Good morning, dear friends, I will be talking about our neighbouring state Gujarat today. I am wearing a dress which is worn by ladies during garba, a traditional dance form of Gujarat.

A little bit about history of the state

Gujarat, located on the west coast of India, has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It has had its fair share of maharajas and princes too. The region was part of the flourishing Indus valley civilization, dating back to 3700 BC, connected to trade routes and acting as gateway to Middle East. There are many ancient sites of interest in Gujarat like Dholavira, Lothal etc. Gujarat takes its name from the nomadic tribe of Gujjars who settled here. Gujarat is a mix of diverse ethnic people with influences from various countries in middle east as a result of various invasions and trade connections. You can also witness some Maratha culture due to significant control of Marathas in 18th century.

Gujarat came under the administration of the British East India Company in 1818. After the Indian Mutiny of 1857–58, the area became a province of the British crown. With Indian independence in 1947, the province of Gujarat was included in Bombay state. On May 1, 1960, India’s Bombay state was split into present-day Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Father of our nation, Shri Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi or, as we know him, Mahatma Gandhi, hailed from Porbandar in Gujarat. Gandhiji led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and, above all, achieving swaraj or self-rule. Bringing anti-colonial nationalism to the common Indians, Gandhi ji led them in challenging the British-imposed salt tax with the 400 km Dandi Salt March in 1930 and in calling for the British to quit India in 1942. He was imprisoned many times.
