Have you wondered why dry cleaning takes days or weeks? Well, Dry cleaning takes so long because the cleaning process often occurs outside the city. The cleaning process might not be lengthy, but your clothes have had a fun ride. The reason it had to happen outside of the town is that the chemicals are highly combustible and therefore dangerous to have around. Then another chemical came along that made the process much safer! The clothes no longer have to be shipped outside of the city to be dry-cleaned. Now, the chemist behind this excellent chemical is Henry Martin, who coined the term "1 hour Martinizing."

Prior to 1949 dry cleaners were not able to clean the garments on site. Explosions were a somewhat common experience due to the chemicals highly comustable nature. The process took some time because the clothes needed to leave the dry cleaner, be cleaned then return. This all changed when nonflammable chemicals were now safe to have in store. This allowed for a boom in the dry cleaning space, allowing for "one hour, if necessary!" becoming a promotion amongst the then 5,000 franchises.

In the late 1940s, Martinizing revolutionized the dry-cleaning industry. Chemist Henry Martin discovered that a previously synthesized substance called PERC was a safe, nonflammable substance used for cleaning. Prior to this discovery, garments in need of dry cleaning would be shipped to an off-site location, where clothes were treated with explosive chemicals. Making the dry-cleaning process time-consuming and often leading to fires and explosions. Martin's discovery completely re-shaped the way dry-cleaning worked, and by 1975, there were 5000 franchises that dry-cleaned customers' clothes at their storefronts safely and effectively.

This solvent made the dry cleaning process remarkably safe and efficient. Prior to this, the chemicals used in dry cleaning were highly flammable and explosive, making the entire process extremely hazardous and time-consuming. This invention also propelled Martinizing Dry Cleaning, the dry cleaning business he founded, to great popularity.

Before 1949, many dry cleaners sent garments to plants on the edge of town because the solvents were risky and fires were not unusual. A chemist from Buffalo, Henry Martin, studied a colorless solvent called PERC. He saw that it cleaned well with much lower fire risk, so on-site cleaning might be possible. After testing it in Manhattan, shops could keep the work in-store, cut travel time and speed up service. Over time, this method later called One-Hour Martinizing and it made one-hour turnaround realistic.

Henry Martin, a chemist from Buffalo, New York, revolutionized the dry-cleaning industry in 1949. He coined the term “Martinizing”, a process in which clothes were dry-cleaned in one hour. This process involved the use of a solvent based on a chemical called perchloroethylene (PERC). This chemical is non-flammable and colorless. This solvent was extremely effective in cleaning delicate garments and, most importantly, the solvent was far safer than the previous methods used, which involved dangerous chemicals that were highly combustible. Due to this danger, the dry-cleaning process was done in factories on the outskirts of town. Because of the safety involved with “Martinizing” solvents, dry cleaning was now able to be done in town, in existing laundry facilities, leading to a much faster turnaround time. This was a revolution in the dry cleaning industry and a marketable upgrade.

Dry cleaning is so easy and convenient for those who want to be able to extend the longevity of their clothing. That’s what makes Martinizing so unique, it cuts the time it takes to get your clothes dry cleaned and back to you. The process used in Martinizing is safer to use on sight and in turn able to shorten the process time. Imagine having a last minute event and you need your favorite dress dry cleaned within the next hour. Through the process of Martinizing, it would all be possible.

"Martinizing Day" was created to improve the lives of the consumers. Imagine this being done in one hour. There was a process created that makes dry cleaning fast, affordable, and safe. Dry cleaning's turnaround time would be to have your clothes ready in an hour at a reasonable price. This process is called Martinizing.

Some might be baffled by the phrase “1 hour martinizing” up on signs around the city, but what does that mean? Well, the story begins by understanding how dry cleaning was done before the invention of martizing came about. Dry cleaning was a time-consuming process that often took days, as it was typically done outside the city. The chemicals used in dry cleaning are hazardous and combustible, so the process often takes place outside of the city. Henry Martin, a chemist from Buffalo, discovered the nonflammable, colorless chemical that can also be used for dry-cleaning. Martin then trademarked the name and began a series of one-hour Martinizing franchises, as dry cleaning could be done more efficiently.

Over 70 years ago, you would go to a store, drop off your items, and wait days to receive the items back. This was due to the chemicals used in dry cleaning being highly flammable, causing the process to take much longer. Everyone seemed to be okay with this back then until Henry Martin, who discovered a nonflammable alternative to getting the job done. He took this method and passed it around to all interested cleaners throughout Manhattan, and many were interested, leading to Martin’s trademark “Martinizing.” Franchises opened all over marketing “One Hour Martinizing” and “Fresh as a Flower in Just One Hour!” Though the method is no longer in use, This process provided ease for everyone, allowing them to receive their clothes back with such a quick turnaround.

It helps take the load off of you in regards to your laundry, and it is a safer way to extend your favorite outfit’s shelf life. As we all know, getting your clothes dry cleaned can take a few days. Have you ever wondered if it could be done in a day, or even better, an hour? That was the goal of chemist Henry Martin, who 70 years ago developed the method of using a colorless, non flammable chemical that was safe to use for clothes; a process which we now know today as Martinizing

70 years ago the laundry industry was changed forever. Back in 1949 you’d drop off your clothes, and then they’d get sent to a plant to be laundered. Explosions were a real possibility. The chemicals they used could essentially create a mini bomb in your neighborhood. This plant was all the way in the outskirts of the city. Anyway along came this chemist who studied these chemicals. He found a safer way solvent called perchloroethylene. He invented martinizing allowing cleaners to clean your clothes in just one hour. This led to faster dry cleaning, and by 1975 there were over 5000 franchises. All thanks to Martin Faraday because he didn’t like waiting for his clothes all day. This made laundry like fast food.

The term "martinizing" became a huge term for the dry-cleaning industry. After it was discovered in 1949 by chemist Henry Martin, "martinizing" completely redefined what dry-cleaning meant. Before this amazing discovery, dry cleaners would collect customers' clothing and ship it to an off-site facility, which not only made it time-consuming, but was also extremely dangerous as the chemicals used to clean the clothes were extremely flammable. Luckily for this industry, Martinizing was adopted by most dry cleaners, and they became capable of cleaning clothes in as little as one hour. Martinizing became the ultimate method for dry-cleaning, and to this day, it is the main reason why it's safe, affordable, and fast.

It was a dangerous endeavor for the workers, so much so they didn't clean the clothes at the store. How absurd, really, that they couldn't clean a coat without leaving to a factory. The came Henry Martin, he discovered a nonflammable, colorless chemical - Martinizing - that changed the game. Suddenly, the impossible became ordinary. Coats were cleaned within an hour, a cultural renaissance with surprising deftness.

Dry cleaning has been greatly improved over the years. 70 years ago, the processes of dry cleaning were almost inconceivable when thinking of our modern conveniences. Thanks to Henry Martin from Buffalo, New York, and his processes called “Martinizing”, dry cleaning is now able to be completed in as little as one hour. Before Martin’s genius invention of using PERC, a solvent, which is short for perchloroethylene, dry cleaning was a multi-day affair due to the dangerous chemicals used, which caused explosions and had high flammability. That is why dry cleaning was shipped to factories on the outskirts of town. PERC as a solvent is nonflammable and colorless, and poses no danger to the public. Dry cleaners were glad to use the new product because of its safety, effectiveness. Due to the safety of PERC, dry cleaners completed the work of laundering in town, close to the public. The close distance of the work being done enabled the process to be done and completed in one hour. This process revolutionized the dry cleaning industry, and by 1975, there were over 5,000 dry cleaning franchises that advertised “Fresh as a Flower” cleaning. We busy folks today all owe a debt of gratitude and a big round of applause to Henry Martin, the father of speedy dry cleaning, with his revolutionary processes called “Martinizing”.
