As a computer science student, I was always interested in the impact that technology has on our lives. However, it wasn't until I joined Project Bracket, a computer science club at DVC that prioritizes collaborative project development that changed my perspective on technology’s beneficial impact. I was tasked with continuing development on a social platform that would make it easier for DVC students to connect with their classmates, professors, counselors, and tutors to receive one-on-one support and guidance, and for general communication. At first, I was excited about the project, thinking that it would truly help students to be more connected with the campus. But as I delved deeper into the project, I began to question the implications of the app if it is used incorrectly or without awareness.

I soon realized that technology can have unintended consequences on people's mental and emotional well-being. While the app may help some students stay connected with their classmates and friends on campus, it may not foster relationships with those who feel excluded or left out. Additionally, the app was only compatible on Android devices since we were using Android Studio at the time to develop it, so Apple users would be feeling left out and missing out on this opportunity. It later made me wonder similar questions to my critical question: how can we evaluate the impact of technology on human well-being and quality of life? How can we create technology that benefits everyone, not just a privileged few? I began to research and ask questions, trying to find answers and solutions. This experience taught me that as a computer science student, I have a responsibility to consider the broader implications of the technology I create and how it affects people's lives. It's not just about the technical aspect, but also the ethical and social impact of technology. (306)

SPECIAL SAUCE - Survey

I created a survey and sent it to several students.
Here are the results:
Of the 13 respondents, 2 (15.4%) rated their technology use on a daily basis to be an 8, 5 (38.5%) rated to be a 9, and 6 (38.5%) rated to be a 10. All of the respondents reported their technology usage to be on the higher-end of the scale from 8-10. In terms of how they view themselves to be either too reliant or not as reliant on technology, 2 (15.4%) rated to be a 7, 1 person (7.7%) rated to be an 8. 4 (30.8%) rated to be a 9, and 6 (46.2%) rated to be a 10. Once again, the respondents rated themselves to be on the higher end of the scale with the addition of 7 as a ranking choice (7-10). When asked if society's dependence on technology is excessive or if not enough people are using technology to its full potential, a surprising 4 (30.8%) rated it to be 5. The rest of the respondents believed society's technology use to be excessive with their answer choices belonging to the higher end of the scale as 1 person (7.7%) rated it to be a 7, 2 (15.4%) rated it to be an 8, 1 person (7.7%) rated it to be a 9, and 5 (38.5%) rated it to be a 10. When asked if technology has ever negatively impacted them or mostly brought positive experiences, the range of answers broaden. 1 person (7.7%) rated to be a 1, 1 person (7.7%) rated to be a 3, 3 (23.1%) rated to be a 5, 3 (23.1%) rated to be a 6, 2 (15.4%) rated to be a 7, and the remaining 3 (23.1%) each rated 8, 9, and 10 individually. When asked if the respondents' quality of life would be "better" or "worse" if they had limited access to technology, the answer choices varied once again on the scale with lower end answers indicating "worse" and higher-end answers indicating "better." 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 1, 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 2, 5 (38.5%) rated to be a 4, 2 (15.4%) rated to be a 5, 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 6, 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 9, and 2 (15.4%) rated to be a 10. When asked if the respondents are more inclined to believe that the benefits of technology outweigh the drawbacks or vice versa, the majority of answer choices lie between 6-10, indicating that they believe the benefits do outweigh the drawbacks. 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 1, 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 4, 2 (15.4%) rated to be a 5, 1 (7.7%) rated to be a 6, 3 (23.1%) rated to be a 7, 2 (15.4%) rated to be an 8, and 3 (23.1%) rated to be a 10. No additional information was provided by the respondents in regards to the context of their decisions for their answer choices in the option "sharing" section at the end of the survey.

What stood out to me was how mixed the responses were when asked about the impact of technology on the respondents' lives. While the majority believed that the benefits of technology outweigh its drawbacks, close to 40% of the respondents rated their personal experience with technology as negative, with scores ranging from 1-7 on the scale. It's clear that technology plays an important role in the daily lives of the respondents. All of the respondents rated their technology usage to be 8 or above, which suggests that they are heavily reliant on technology in their daily lives. The survey results show a growing concern about technology's impact on society and its potential consequences. Over 60% of respondents believed that society's dependence on technology is excessive, while 30.8% believed that not enough people are using technology to its full capabilities. When asked about the potential impact of limited access to technology, the responses were once again mixed, with some believing that their quality of life would be worse without technology, while others believed it would be better. This suggests that while technology has become an integral part of our lives, its impact on our quality of life is not ensuring to be one-sided as we may think. In conducting this survey, I have learned to recognize the importance of considering individual perspectives and experiences when evaluating technology's impact. By gathering data from a range of individuals, it has helped me to gain a better understanding of how technology affects people in different ways. It is important to understand its impact on individuals and society and work towards developing strategies that promote its positive effects while minimizing any potential negative consequences.

ORIGINAL ART

For the original art, I made a vintage-styled ad that took heavy inspiration from an old Porsche ad. The original ad had the headline: "Honestly now, Did you spend your youth dreaming about someday owning a Nissan or Mitsubishi?" I decided to put my own spin on the ad with the advertiser being a made-up tech company instead of an automobile manufacturer. This ad was made using technology (Canva), whereas the original was likely to be hand-drawn for poster by the Porsche marketing team. When comparing the two ads, the original feels to have more "character" or "substance" in how it portrays the message, whereas mine feels just a bit bland or ordinary. Looking at it deeply, I think the comparison represents how technology cannot fully replicate the "essence" or "art" of original things such as paintings and portraits, but significant advancements have made it become a closer reality.
