They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

The Good Samaritan is set on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. The landscape of this road was very barren and the road was renowned to have many robberies along it. In the period this story is set the Romans were in control of the region and the Jews were the ones living in the area. The Romans had devised a two- tiered system to rule the land where there was a government of overseers that were Roman and then Jewish leaders who ruled in the name of Rome.
The man who was robbed in this story is most likely a Jew, due to the fact that he was on the road from Jerusalem meaning he is more than likely a fellow Jew. The Levite who passed the Jew is a assistant to the priest. The Levites role is to teach people about the Torah. The priest who also passed the Jew was a very important man and had a strong place in society. Priests were trained in law, literature, tradition and religion. The Samaritan who stopped and helped the Jew was a half Jew and was despised because of this. The Samaritan was on his way from Samaria.
Judaism in this period of time was a mixture of four distinct movements; Zealot, Sadducees, Pharisees and Essenes. Judaism had purity laws which were very controlling and dominant in every day life. These laws came from the Torah which stated that if you were to touch something 'unclean' you would become 'unclean' and therefore impure. These rules were used to exclude if you broke one if these laws you were excluded from society, as they dominated your level of holiness. If you were part of the elite group of society you were more holy, the lower you got in society the less pure you were. Samaritans were at the bottom of the social hierarchy.
The messages conveyed in this parable are that we must love our neighbour. We all have pre- conceived ideas of who our neighbours are and who is worthy of our service when in reality our neighbour is anyone and everyone. This parable also shows us how we need Jesus to save us, that we need a saviour. We can’t keep the law with the intent to save ourselves, as we need someone to save us. Which is Jesus. The Good Samaritan parable may have inspired Caroline Chisholm as she saw that girls were in need; people were struggling right in front of her. So like the Samaritan she helped them, Caroline didn’t judge the girls for where they stand on the social hierarchy. She just saw that they needed help and so she helped them.

Lang vowed to “live and die amongst his own people”, not Catholics.

Caroline wrote this for the people of Australia who had heard and seen Lang’s predications of the future of Australia. Caroline aimed her piece of writing towards Australian political leaders as well. This piece of writing was so important to Caroline as she wanted her emigration plan to work and to be accepted by the Australian political leaders. But if Lang stirred up enough rumours her plan could fall through.

People need to be treated like humans, if you don’t have time to restore then you don’t have the chance to fulfil duties with God. Everyone needs to contribute to the community, although not all in the same way. Everyone must be payed fairly so that they can look after themselves. When rights exist they must be religiously respected and when disrespected those who injured the rights must be disciplined. You should be in a field of work that suits you and embraces your talents. There must be people who give advice to help keep everyone and thing under control. No one should be exploited and everyone should be treated with the same amount of respect, no matter what your financial situation. The disadvantage should have special attention as they are in weaker position in society.
|
This is all very relevant to Caroline Chisholm as she saw people as people, she realised that people needed jobs to have a stable life. So Caroline went and supported people to get jobs, to get fair wages and to work in a environment that was suitable for them. Caroline believed in respecting everyone and treating everyone as a equal as you saw that she helped the conditions of people on ships. So that it wasn’t just the captains who got to have a nice ship ride, so everyone could have a safe ride. Caroline also saw disadvantaged people in society and so she did give them special treatment and really went out of her way to help them.

Sydney, 1841 at St Mary's Cathedral Caroline knelt at the altar and made this vow to the Lord. I promise to know neither country nor creed, but to try and serve all justly and impartially. This vow relates to her mission in life as she did take anyone in need and serve them. She strived for justice for everyone.

Caroline Jones Chisholm was born on 30 May 1808, Northampton, England. She was born into a finically stable, protestant family. Her father was William Jones and her mother was Caroline Jones, she had 3 brothers and 2 sisters and was the youngest of the lot. She received an education as a child and at a young age was helping the neighbouring villages sick and poor people. During the time of Caroline Chisholm the industrial revolution was in full swing and with this a new massive class of poor people had emerged. At the age of 22 she married her husband Archibald Chisholm, this was with the condition that she was able to continue her serving of the disadvantaged. Archibald was a Catholic so in 1830 Caroline became a Catholic. This was a hard decision for her as at the time Catholicism was considered suspicious. Her life mission was to help the people that need help. Her social reforms were based her Christian Faith and her understanding of serving others. Wherever Caroline was if justice was needed she would be there making things just. Caroline was known as 'the emigrants friend'. Due to all she had done with immigrants in Australia. She passed away on 25 March 1877, London, England. The grateful memory of Caroline lives on as pilgrims, groups and individuals visit her grave and pray. In Northampton Catholic and Anglican communities hold commemorative services in memory of her. From 1967 to 1994 Caroline Chisholm was put on the Australian five dollar note, in memory of her work for Australia. Many monuments have also been created in the name of her like The Caroline Chisholm Gold Shelter. This commemorates her contribution to diggers and their families. Caroline Chisholm will always been known for her philanthropic work in numerous places of the world and for her determination towards justice in communities.

Priestly, Prophetic and Kingly work of Jesus.

Caroline Chisholm represented the priestly roles of Christ through dedicating her life to helping others. When she was young she would visit local villages and help the sick and elderly. When her husband proposed to her she wouldn't accept his marriage unless he accepted that she would continue to do her philanthropic labour. Caroline brought people together, like the many families she helped in the Gold Rush period. Or the many people who had very restrictive lands rights given to them by the government. She assisted them and stood up for these people creating stronger communities.

Caroline spoke out and acted upon inequalities in society all the time. This shows how she represented the prophetic roles of Jesus. When living in India in 1832 Caroline observed the soldiers and their families and saw how the daughters were without discipline and didn’t have a education. So Caroline acted on this by creating The Female School of Industry for the Daughters of European Soldiers. When she was in Australia in 1841 Caroline witnessed young immigrant girls who had no home, money or job. So she established the Female Immigrants Homes, this spread from one home to 16 by the end of 1842. But Caroline’s prophetic role didn't end there, she went on to creating a three- point agenda to promote the settlement of Australia. This plan worked and she had eradicated overcrowding and injurious conditions on ships, had two shiploads of orphans taken and secured transport and homes for them. She promoted the colonization of Australia. Caroline also set up the Family Colonization Loan Society that lent money to migrant families that need to travel to Australia. Even after doing all of that Caroline still kept fighting for equality like in the Gold Rush period in Australia she fought for equal land rights. Caroline Chisholm displayed the prophetic work of Jesus throughout her whole life. Her determination towards acting on injustices and freedom within society showed her work for Jesus.

Caroline Chisholm was a servant of God, and taught people that they need to love another through her actions. She would stand on the wharfs and wait for the emigrant girls to hop off their ships, then she would make sure they are taken care for. This action shows her love for other people and how she spread God’s love. All the actions Caroline did in her life were grounded in her faith and her understanding as a Christian as being called to serve. This shaped her to be a demonstration of Kingly work for God.
