- Having a mood meter in the classroom can help students to identify what mood they are in.

- Once students know where they are they can use strategies to change their mood to one that is better suited for learning.

- Emotions and behaviors are a form of communication. It is important as an educator to be able to appropriately read these behaviors in order to understand the students needs.

-Other examples of mood meters include photos of popular cartoon characters (Eeyore, Joy, Kermit, Oscar the Grouch) to help the students visualize their emotions better.

Traditionally, math is the least favorite subject among students. Due to the lack of interest and overall difficulty, students become overly frustrated with math.

Coming into the math classroom or the math lesson already frustrated can leave students feeling helpless before the lesson even starts. When this happens, students are even less likely to try to understand the new material.

Teachers must make math into a more exciting and engaging subject. Implementing UDL into the curriculum will make the lessons way more accessible for students.
-Provide choice
-Present new information in different ways (not just lecture)
- Create untraditional assessments
-Allow students to incorporate art into their projects.
-Use technology and manipulative to make the information more concrete for students.

- Appreciation Circle:
A class wide activity where each student pulls a name and gives that person a compliment. This helps students learn to be kind to one another.
"This was my favorite activity each week. I loved watching my students be kind and sincere with one another. I saw a major change in how the students interacted with each other over the course of the year as a result" Shawna (Grades 4 and 5 Teacher)

-Mindful Minute
At the beginning of class and any time the class seems to need it, the student participate in a minute of silence. Encourage students to do a body scan, practice their breathing, or reflect.
"I loved incorporating mindfulness into my classroom. Giving students a minute to really connect to themselves was really beneficial to their abilities to remain engaged in class. " -Kate (Grade 3 Teacher)

-Communicate openly with students
Find out how the students are feeling. It is important to know when students feel lost and overwhelmed. Similarly, it is important to know when students are interested and excited.
"Sometimes I feel invisible in class because my teacher has no idea what is going on. I wish she would ask" Graham (Grade 4 student)

After teaching new materials it is helpful to give students time to reflect. Students need time to process what they have learned before quickly transitioning to something else. This time can help students identify their concerns and wonderings about the new information.

Expert learners understand their brains and the ways that they learn best.
