All three lessons are content area aligned. Lessons 2 and 3 use the exact same story that is initially literacy and then social studies.

The essential literacy strategy used to improve reading comprehension in this learning segment is story retell through identifying the parts of a story focusing on story sequencing. The related skills needed to develop this learning strategy are key elements of a story, sequence of events, main idea, and identifying beginning, middle, and end. During the learning segment, students will use their prior knowledge to build on what they know about beginning, middle, and end to retell the story “The tortoise and the Hare”. During the learning segment students will use picture cards to help them put the story back in order and draw pictures to identify key parts of the story to show their understanding of story retell using beginning, middle, and end. This directly relates to standard R.L.K.3 With prompting and support, identify characters, settings, and major events in a story. On day 1 students will learn the key vocabulary for the lesson. On day 2 the students will practice their understanding as a whole by putting the story back together with the story retelling cards. And on Day 3 the students will independently show their understanding of story retell by independently writing key details from the beginning, middle, and end by creating a flap book.

In lesson two, I connect the standard to the essential literacy strategy of compare and contrast by using a written response to compare and contrast narrators’ point of view. In lesson three, I connect the standard to the essential literacy strategy of compare and contrast by using a written response that compares and contrast the types of narration in the texts and explaining what each type reveals about the narrators’ point of view.

The primary literacy focus of the 3 - lesson is that students will be able to RL.1.2 retell stories, including key details, sequence of events, and character description. On day 1 I introduce what a community is and how we all live in different types, On day 2 we will visualize the story and talk more details about the story and starting thinking about the sequence of events. On day 3 they should be able to retell the story in the correct order of Beginning, Middle, and End.
