Pt Katniss Everdeen is participating in the Hunger Games, an intense competition resulting in only one surviving winner, when an enemy throws a spear that impales her calf. It causes her to fall and she hits her head. She runs away otherwise unharmed, but the wound is continually bleeding.

Apparent Injuries

Katniss has a penetrating wound to her left calf that she self-extracts a dirty spear out of. The wound is approximately 8 centimeters long, 3.5 inches deep, and 1 centimeter wide. The wound is still bleeding. She also has a bruise the left portion of her forehead that is 3 inches by 3 inches. No other injuries.

The environment in which Katniss injured her leg is a large artificial forest. There is a lot of dirt, bacteria, rain, and a large river. The terrain is difficult with rocks and trees everywhere.

For assignment purposes, this injury occurred in Yellowstone National Forest. The two closest hospitals are Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center and Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center. Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center is a trauma five hospital. They have an onsite emergency department that offers the ability to stabilize patients in addition to a helipad for emergency air ambulance services. Bozeman Health Deaconess Regional Medical Center is a trauma three. They have a cath lab and an OR in the hospital in addition to more equipement to care for emergent patients.

Paramedic Response

EMS arrives and attempts to stop bleeding with hemostatic gauze and direct pressure which is successful. Pt is transported to the lvl 3 trauma center. En route IV access is established and 50mcg of fentanyl is administered for pain. Pt is continually monitored during transport. Upon arrival report is given to hospital staff and Pt care is transferred.
