Green Schools

In the module green school we just did some research about an organisation in Baldoyle that try’s to make the area greener. Thy already created some green spots and there are other projects planned. They also try to protect rare animals. All in all try to help the planet through little projects. Because manny little thing are at the end one big thing.
We are divided into teams and all work on different projects. My group has to try to improve the water consumption for the school and the students.

We have the topic of water. At the beginning, we thought about what could be improved at the school to save water.

We came up with the following ideas:

1) Collect rainwater and use it for watering in warm periods

2) Teach the pupils to buy a good water bottle and always fill it up and not to drink from a single bottle every day.

3) Tell the pupils how important water is so that they use it more sparingly

4) Give tips on how to save water

Firstly, we walked around the school to see if rainwater was already being collected. We realised that most of the gutters are a bit above the ground and the water flows onto the ground or into a gully. There was also a rain barrel, but we don't know whether the water from it is used.

Next, we searched the internet for ways to save water. Here are a few examples:

- Take short showers

- Install a rimless toilet

- Defrost food in the fridge

- Eliminate leaks

- Use a dishwasher

- Fix dripping taps

- Turn off the tap

- Water plants wisely

We then searched for information that many people don't know about water. We came across the topic of virtual water. But what is virtual water anyway?

Virtual water is water that is used to produce food and objects and is polluted or evaporates. Virtual water is used indirectly.

Here are some examples:

- One cup of coffee = 140 litres of water (production)

- 1 kg of coffee bean = 21,000 litres of water (growth)

- 1 kg meet = 15,455 litres of water (growth of animal)

- 1 kg of cheeses = 5,000 litres of water

- One care = 400,000 litres of water

- One sheet of paper = 2,000 litres of water

I personally find this very interesting and exciting because you never think about it. Seeing these facts and knowing how much water is needed for everything we use in everyday life.

That's all we've done and found out so far.

In the PE lessons we will go the next weeks to the badminton hall, because in November we have to be an arbitrator at a badminton match. The first lesson was fun. We learned two different surcharges (a short and a layer) and played a lot.
In the next few hours we were taught how to be a line judge, which signs you have to give when, how to get in properly, sit down and have the right attitude with you, etc. This became more practised every hour for singles. The next few hours we will learn the same for doubles.

In my mini company we started a project were we have to create our own cereal brand in teams. First of all, we had to think about which target group we want. We chose children. At the moment we are creating a prototype. The name of the brand is Coco bear, as mascot we have a brown bear and as slogan “Eat like a bear”. The cereal box will be green with the bear and a bowl with berries on it. Because the ingredients will be whole grain weed, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries covered with honey. On the back we want to make a small labyrinth for the children. The plans are then implemented on a prototype.

We’ve already talked about which ones exist and had to write a short text about whatever comes to our mind when we think about holidays.
In class everyone had to think about her favourite place and try to describe as good as you can. For homework we had to imagine a place and describe it.
We also learned how to describe people through comparing. We had to imagine a person and wrote about them in the place we imaged before and describe how they look there.

Day 1:
All T.Y. students went from the 13.09-15.09 to Achill. We drove around 5 hours and when we arrived we had direct lunch. After lunch we went to a little house at the coast where we switched our normal cloths into wetsuits. We drove by bus 15 minutes to a little lake where we got into the water and swam to a platform in middle of the lake. On the platforms we pusht each other into the water and made a little fight „Irish students against german students“. It was a lot of fun just like the return trip. We sang all together on the bus (which was quiet loud). We changed back into our normal cloths and went to our host mother Norma. We divided rooms and then there was spaghetti bolognese for dinner. After that, we were picked up by a bus and taken to the hall where we played games and learned Irish dances. Then we became our phones until we went back to Norma, where we ate pancakes and went to sleep.

Day 2:
The bus came in the morning and took us around a hill to the beginning of the island. We stopped at a little castle and went on a hike along the coast together. After that we had lunch at the hall again. Unfortunately we had to do the spa day in the afternoon, because the water was to restless for cliff jumping. That means we went in a mod river next to the lake from the first day. Everyone was brown from top to bottom, that looked funny. We had to clime over surfboards, jump into the river, slides slides and swing in the river on a robe. It was like a parcour which endet in the lake. So we could clean our selfs a little bit. After that there was some time left, that we went on the platforms in the lake again. When the programm was finished we went to Norma and hat rice with chicken curry for dinner. In the evening we went to the hall again and learned to other Irish dances.

Day 3:
We had to wake up early, because we went surfing on that day. To get to the beach where we went surfing, we had to take the bus for a while. When we arrived, we got surfboards warmed up briefly and then plunged directly into the waves. It worked pretty well and better than expected. I think the surfing was my personal highlight. After arriving back where our host families lived, we changed again in our normal cloths and went to the hall for lunch again. Unfortunately, it went home again. With the bus about 5 hours until we were back at school.

There we once walked upstairs around the stadium. We were able to take pictures and were told facts. Then we went down to the lawn and into the cabins. Afterwards, you could make a few games yourself to test, for example, reaction time or bounce. Overall, it was a great experience with interesting facts.

I'm working in a The Book Haven Sutton. My working day starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. I have a half-hour break in between. On the first day, I was allowed to clear out the shop window, clean it and then put new stuff in and design it as I wanted. Up to now, I have mainly had to sort games and scan new deliveries, put a price sticker on them and sort them.

This time I had to sort and count birthday, engagement, wedding, anniversary, christening, etc cards first. That it looks better and so that we know from which cards we have to order new ones. Then I had to sort shelves and finally I was allowed to collect. I really liked it.

The next time I had to reorganize a bookshelf and put it back in the right order. The books were about mental help, diets, dream body building, depression, how to deal with losses and the like.

In the fourth week, I sorted the children's and teenagers' books by author's last name on the shelf and filled in gaps in the book series when we had the right one. After that, I had to sort and arrange books and toys at three stands for toddlers.

I was unable to come to my internship a few times due to illness, the mid term break and badminton.

The next time I could come in, I had to put some new books and games that came in into the wright shelves. Then I had to try a new product. It was something for children to make. I first made a whale out of cardboard templates and after a few complications it worked well. Then I was allowed to choose and make two more animals. It was a tiger and a hummingbird. In the end, I had a water animal, a land animal and an air animal to present as finished specimens. Then I had to rearrange exercise books at the back so that the shelves were tidier and clearer. After the space was created, I had to clear school books from the front of the shop to the now free shelves.

On my last day I sorted the children's book shelves and the children's toy shelf again, reorganised them and made sure that all the same and matching things were together. Then I got a present and was allowed to leave early because another employee came to help out and they didn't need me anymore.

I had to sort the books in a shelves, with children books, after the author's surnames first. Then I had to go to a shelf where there were lots of books and notebooks all mixed up, find all the books that had something to do with Ireland and put them in a compartment. Then I was allowed to clear the new orders that came in with the best sellers. After that I had to vacuum the back area and then do a bit of selling.

We had to think about what feelings we would have in different situations. In between and at the end we had to lie down on the floor and there was an audio we had to listen to with our eyes closed. It was about paying attention to our breathing. During the course it was made clear again and again how normal feelings are and that everyone has them.

You could walk around and talk to the people on stands you were interested in. On some of them you also could try things on your own. For example, measure your jumping power, traction and flexibility. Play kahoot, try on equipment, decorate a cupcake, get a massage or try to crack locks. At some stalls there were very nice people with whom you could inform yourself well about the respective job. I had a really good conversation with a guy from the army that flies the helicopter. I learned a lot about the daily life, which was really interesting because I've been thinking about going to the army for a long time.
All in all was it a good day with little funny activities.

We calculated how much money we have to put into production and a very high sum came out. It was the consideration whether we would make another product, but then we decided against it. After that we went on just following the way. We passed monkeys, wolfs, red pandas, aye-ayes and some more. Then we walked around da lake where we saw giraffes, zebras, rhinoceros, chimpanzees, okapis, bongos etc. Afterward we had a little presentation about how our electronic devices have influence on extinct animals. And which animals are in the zoo that are threatened with extinction. For example from the bongos are only 100 left in the whole world. Luckily we had some time left and could watch the elephants, penguins and seals. After that we had lunch and went back to the school thereafter.

We had an hour about smoking and vaping and what it does to our body. There were many shocking facts. I particularly remember the following things:

1) "secondhand" smokers. This means that if you always stand next to a person when they smoke, you end up with lungs as bad as theirs.

2) Smoking also affects you more than you think. For example, it can aggravate wounds and injuries, causing them to fester.

3) As soon as you inhale, the nicotine is in your brain within 10 seconds. Nicotine makes you addicted.

4) Even if you don't inhale all the way into your lungs but just leave it in your mouth and then exhale again, it causes just as much damage, just in different places.

5) More than 5,000 chemical substances are inhaled when pulling on a cigarette/vape. These clog the bronchioles, making it harder to breathe. Breathing so quickly also causes the heart to beat faster in the long term. This often causes heart attacks. The substances that are deposited in the lungs look like a spinny, greasy liquid. The lungs also turn black.

At the beginning, the two women introduced themselves. One worked for Irish television, mainly making documentaries. The other has made many different films.

They explained different perspectives and their functions. For example, the beginning of a scene is often filmed from further away so that you can see where the scene is taking place and possibly get an idea of the mood. The next image is then, for example, of a person closer with the surroundings around them and the third is directly very close to the person so that you can recognise the feelings and the mood. Next, different camera angles were shown and explained how they are used. People are often filmed from below who are supposed to look powerful, scary, very tall or models you look up to. From above is filmed when someone is supposed to look very small, scared, shy or when it is a small child (compared to adults).

We were then told how to use the tablets and what kind of videos we could make (music videos, documentaries, film scenes, etc.).

My group decided to make a music video for the song "Santa tell me" by Ariana Grande. We were shown again how to make good transitions (zooming into one colour and out of the same colour in the next scene). Mr Ryen happened to have some Christmas decorations that we could use. At first we tried to recreate the original music video, but then we quickly added our own ideas. There was lip-singing, gymnastics and other performances. Once we had shot all the scenes, we edited them together on the iPad using iMovie. The end result was good.

All in all, the workshop was a lot of fun!

We were linesmen at the Irish Badminton Open for three days.

On the first day we were assigned an international linesman to our team. As we were in Group A, we were the first to be allowed out onto the court. It was a mixed doubles. Later on, we also judged singles. The day ran in such a way that we always judged one game, then had a break and then judged again. Fortunately, I didn't make any mistakes throughout the day and was always able to clearly determine the points.

As we had a lot of fun, we were allowed to stay longer and only went home at 8pm instead of 4pm. In return we got free dinner, it was very good.

The second day was similar to the first. I judged singles and doubles. The matches became a bit more challenging to judge. The players hit the shuttlecock harder and the movement was faster. This made some decisions less clear, but everything worked out without any mistakes. During the breaks, we got to know many international line judges, as there were some from German-speaking countries. It was very nice and there was good dialogue.

On the third day, we were assigned new international linesmen, as not all the linesmen from the first day were still there. The performance and the level of the players also improved on the third day. You could see it in the length of the matches. Many had to play three rounds because the performance was even. This meant that we linesmen also had to concentrate for longer. The games often lasted up to an hour. On the court where I judged, there were again singles as well as doubles.

Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and had a great time both on and off the court. If I have the opportunity I would love to do it again. For this reason, Lissy and I have applied to the German Badminton Association and are in contact with them.

It was one of the best experiences of the transition year.

Our stand was fully decorated with posters, self-made stars, business cards and of course our finished products. We put a few chocolates on our table, the rest we had in an extra box behind the table. All orders were packed under the table in a box ready to hand out. We digitised our analogue order book on an iPad to make it easier for us to see who had already placed their order and who had paid. This made it easier for us to keep track of everything and swipe out all the orders that had been sold.

Sales didn't go very well at the beginning and we were afraid that we wouldn't be able to get rid of our 35 to 40 pre-produced chocolates. After an hour we still had quite a few. However, we somehow managed to sell almost all of them and in the end there were only two left, which I took home for my host family.

Overall, the Christmas fair was a lot of fun, even if it was stressful at times beforehand.

I have gained a lot of experience from the project. That there can be crises in which you are not sure whether you will make a profit with the product and may consider cancelling it. That's part of it. Sometimes you have to take risks and speculate, you never know for sure how well the business will go. It's also a different kind of teamwork that you experience, because you have to make decisions with another person over a long period of time and if you disagree, you have to look for compromises.

The experience has also given me personally a better insight into business and a better understanding of the business world. I would do it again any time.

IT presentation

Two students first told us about women in male-dominated jobs, specifically related to IT, computer and technical professions.

Then a man and a woman who have been working in IT for several years told us about their day-to-day jobs. They then gave us a simple presentation explaining how the systems they work with work and how to program them. It was explained with the example of "Spotify", a music app. If you enter a letter in the search bar, artists and songs that start with this letter are suggested directly. Even if you enter part of a song lyric, the app can recognize it. And even if you don't spell a title correctly, for example because you mistype it, the correct one will still be displayed. All these functions can be created through programming.

It is difficult to explain programming without a sketch. But basically you can say that there are certain formalities that you have to write at the beginning before you start programming properly. Then you give commands that only need to be varied minimally depending on what exactly you want to achieve with this command. The commands also have rules of characters before and after the command that must be used so that the program understands it. For example, { must be placed before all commands and } after all commands, and ; must be placed again after each individual command. Numbers must often be enclosed in brackets. Depending on the command, certain words must be written in certain upper and lower case letters and if there are several words, a . must usually be placed between them. Due to all the rules and the spelling with many characters, it is often easy to make a mistake. However, once you have finished writing a sketch, you can have it checked by the app you are using to write it. If you have made a mistake, the line in which it was made is marked and in some cases the exact error is written. This sometimes makes it easier to find mistakes.

In principle, programming consists of writing facts or commands into a program. To do this, you have to memorize the respective spellings for certain commands (these days, however, you can also quickly write them down). Then you test the sketch and if errors occur, you discover them, find them and correct them.

On December 15, we took a trip to Belfast. After about two hours on the bus, we arrived at W5.
There we were divided into two groups. My group first had a short presentation on how to make music through technology.

It was fun because we were allowed to try out a lot ourselves. The first thing we had to do was build a simple circuit diagram to light up a lamp. Then we had to modify it slightly to install a propeller instead of a lamp. We could turn it on and off using switches. Then we were able to modify the circuit diagram again slightly to install a loudspeaker. This time there was a switch and a button. Depending on what you pressed, different sounds were produced. But since that wasn't enough for us, we added the propeller and the lamp to the circuit diagram ourselves. So in the end we had an illuminated lamp (but not so bright because the propeller was not so bright) a rotating propeller and a noisy loudspeaker :).
We were also allowed to make ourselves an electric guitar. We were given a cardboard guitar and had to attach the electrical components to it. There was a kind of keyboard, where the strings of the guitar would normally be, and a loudspeaker with a volume control. You could play simple songs.

Then we first went into a room where there was information about the human body. About organs, nerves, bones and more. In the next room there were more technical things like pulleys, windpipes, cogwheels, electricity and mini electric racing cars. Finally, you could climb on an interesting abstract construction. It looked very nice, but was a bit narrow in some places. All in all, it was a lot of fun.

After the business stuff, we went to the Christmas market. Unfortunately, we only had an hour. There were lots of little stalls with all sorts of things. Most of them had food such as bratwurst, sweets, crêpes, burgers, kebabs, Baumstriezel and much more. However, there were also some stalls selling Christmas decorations such as Christmas tree decorations, incense burners, tea light jars or hats, scarves, sweaters and more.
It was great to be at a Christmas market and it was a lot of fun.

At the end of the year, we had a yoga session instead of a normal sports lesson. We started by doing breathing exercises with light music in the background. To do this, we had to make movements where we had to breathe in and out at certain points. Slowly, more and more movements were added. It was mainly stretching with controlled breathing. Towards the end, we just lay on the mat and concentrated on our breathing. Our yoga teacher walked around the room with a stick of incense, which created an even more sensual atmosphere. It felt good and I felt some parts of my body or muscles that I had never really noticed before. I would do yoga again any time.
