Research shows that African American students are disciplined more often and receive more out-of-school suspensions than White students. More alarming is in 2010, 70% of the students involved in school-related arrests or referred to law enforcement were Hispanic or Black (Education Week, 2013).
A 2010 study found that among students who were classified as overtly aggressive, African Americans were more likely to be disciplined than any other group (Education Week, 2013).

I chose to pick African American Students because this population faces a lot of stigma when it comes to behavioral problems in a classroom. They are considered an oppressed population that faces a lot of barriers in our schools today. There needs to be interventions to guarantee academic success that does not involve a student missing out on class-time and staying home, instead of being present at school.

Partnering students with older students which is similar to a "buddy system". Having someone to look up to that will help with homework, and teach them social and leadership skills. I chose to keep students in the classroom instead of students being in out of school suspension and missing out on learning! Schools should avoid zero-tolerance policies because it only harms the students.

I plan to introduce three different interventions targeting African American middle-school children with poor grades and behavior problems while AT school. I plan to catch problems early on before students get out of hand which ends up being prone to dropping out of school.

After reviewing this state wide policy which is in almost every single school state-wide, it can have its pros and cons. The pros can be to remove the child from a classroom that is disrupting others from learning. The cons would be the child being sent home with "sent home work", that do not involve any discipline for what they did. Also, actual teaching is absent which results in a child not learning then getting behind.
Discipline and behavioral problems will sometimes be a reoccurring problem when it is not directly solved. African American students, particularly boys, tend to have the highest rates of school drop outs, poor academics, and even the highest rates of incarceration. Achievement gaps are real and
This policy is not always the answer in a social worker's eyes. The answer is to find the issue, and solve it with evidence based interventions which involves more than the student.
