- A tundra is a treeless region found in the Arctic where the climate is extremely cold and windy (temperatures are 0 degrees Celsius for 6-10 months of the year) & the biome has a very short growing season due to the harsh conditions
- Animals: Musk ox, polar bear, arctic fox, snowy owl, and moose
- Plants: short shrubs, mosses, sedges, lichens, and grasses
- Human impact: humans can disrupt fragile tundra areas/habitats through the construction of ski resorts, mines, and roads & drilling wells can thaw permafrost
- A tundra has 400 varieties of plants but only 48 different animals

- A taiga is a forest found in the cold, subarctic region (a taiga is covered with Evergreen trees & it has the coldest weather out of all the forest biomes) and due to the low rate of precipitation, it has a very short growing season
- Animals: snowshoe hares, otters, moose, dear, and bison
- Plants: shrubs, birches, alders, aspens, and poplars
- Human impact: industrial logging (deforestation), road building, and mining for metals can cause destruction to the forests & the trees
- The Taiga is the largest land-based biome and extends to Europe, Asia, and North America & wildfires are very common in a taiga biome

- The temperature in a temperate deciduous forest is constantly changing & it has four very distinct seasons (winter, spring, summer, and fall) there is abundant moisture, the soil is typically very rich, and the forest is dominated by trees that lose their leaves each year 
- Animal: Insects, slugs, rabbits, timber wolfs & black bears 
- Plants: mountain laurel, azaleas, mosses, ferns, and wildflowers
- Human impact: pollution and deforestation causes harm to the forest & numerous trees 
- Much of the forests in Western Europe are gone due to overdevelopment & many animals in the forest use camouflage

-A desert has extremely dry environments that are home to well-adapted plants and animals (deserts have high evaporation rates, little rainfall, and temperatures that vary greatly between day and night) 
- Animals: camel, fennec fox, bobcat bat, bighorn sheep, and Bactrian camel 
- Plants: barrel cactus, camel thorn tree, sagebrush, prickly pear cactus, and barrel cactus. 
- Human impact: pollution, killing off vegetation, and when humans drive their vehicles over desert soil (scars the soil for many years to come & destroys land)
- Dusts storms in deserts may travel beyond a 100 miles

- A tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long & it is known for its dense canopies of vegetation (tropical rainforests are mainly covered with tall evergreen trees & the environment experiences a high amount of rainfall)
- Animals: monkeys, jaguars, toucan, poison dart frog, and sloths
- Plants: ferns, orchids, mosses, lichens, rubber trees, evergreen trees
- Human impact: deforestation, population, and converting forest to agriculture and urban uses rather than preserving the land and the trees
- Rainforests cover less than 3% of the planet

- Grasslands experience a semi-arid climate and they generally are open, continuous, and fairly flat grassy lands (they are often located between temperate forests at high latitudes and deserts at subtropical latitudes) 
- Animals: wolves, coyotes, swift foxes, leopards, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and snakes
- Plants: buffalo grass, Galletta, purple needlegrass, clover, and wildflowers. 
- Human impact: overgrazing, crop-clearing, and unsustainable agricultural practices in the land
- Fire is necessary for grasslands health & less than 10% of the world's grasslands is protected
